Could a faulty drive damage a mobo?

Hi P
Go to solution Solved by suchamoneypit,

I think it damaging the motherboard is unlikely. However was it just a plain plastic bag? Because Im pretty sure those produce a lot of static electricity when moved around, and I don't think that will play nicely with your HDD's likely exposed PCB. But if it hasn't moved at all, it won't produce any static electricity. Odds are it'll work fine or not at all. If it were me, I would throw it into my main system to test.

Back in 2016 my computer died, I wraped the HDD in a plastic bag and stored it in a safe place (no humidity / heat / dust)

Today I took a look at it, it's a 7200 RPM Seagate 1TB, looks like new, I thought I could use it as a backup drive IF it still works, I haven't tested it.

1.- Pretty dumb question but, is there a possibility that the HDD died from being in a plastic bag? (Idk, static or something)

2.- If I connect it as an internal HDD and it turns out to be faulty or damaged, could it mess up my motherboard / components or something?

(Might aswell tag @seagate_surfer)

Thank you
