Samsung shows of their mobile phone design direction in 2019, and it's HUGE

It seems that Samsung Display invited 20 customers on October 18th to their 2018 Samsung OLED Forum at the Shenzhen Marriott Hotel in China. They showed of where they plan on going with their mobile design in 2019. There are few things to note:

  1. FoD, that is, the fingerprint technology under the screen.
  2. UPS, under-screen sensor (including camera) technology.
  3. HoD, the touch-sensitive touch-sensitive technology.
  4. SoD, screen sound technology.

 

We knew about the in screen fingerprint reader, but I did not expect the UPS and SoD so quickly. I swear, if we get under screen cameras and get rid of the notch this will be the best things about phones in next year. The twitter picture literally shows a bezel less phone, but we'll see about that. I personally would like a few mm bezel just for the screen cracking. It will also be interesting to see how HoD will work. I suppose like touch sensitive keyboards. 

It's funny how few years ago no one, including myself, would believe that Samsung might be the savior of phone, and the only no compromise manufacturer.

still doesn't grab my attention

They should fix their sh$t and release software that does not draw half the battery or more over the day itself without using it much. And also make their phones last longer than 2 years...

Please don't get your hopes up, folks.

 

This is Samsung Display, not the company's mobile division.  You're seeing what technology the OEM part developer is making, not necessarily a Galaxy S10 roadmap.  I wouldn't be surprised if you saw some of this (certainly the fingerprint reader) in the S10, but you're likely going to have to wait for a while to satisfy that tech forum fetish for eliminating even the hint of a bezel.

 

With that all said, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Samsung has confirmed the (I think) 3rd gen ultrasonic in screen fingerprint reader in S10, so that is happening. Honestly, for the rest, I think S11 is more realistic. Or Note 10 at least.

I sincerely hope that Samsung continues to use small bezels on the top and bottom to hold sensors/cameras/speakers rather than a hole in the screen or a notch.

 

Visual continuity is why I bought a Galaxy S9 over competing phones (that and the headphone jack). I don't want my image disrupted by something that could easily sit outside of it.

We already have that technology, it's called front facing speakers and it's unrelated to having it under the screen or not. I strongly double the quality will be anything to write home about though.

I see that as a sign that the manufacturers care more about aesthetics than sound quality, hence why I doubt this will change anything in that respect. I'm not complaining that samsung is doing this as opposed to biting off chunks of the screen to make it look like there's more space, but I just don't really care. I think bezels were just fine. In fact, phones in general have been just fine for a few years now and I don't think I'll consider an upgrade before my current phone breaks or 5G becomes the norm.

I don't think LG will get rid of it that easily. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

LG is already going notch on their phone while Samsung still maintain no notch right now.

Well I'm going to call it: 2020 to 2021 we will see dual screen phones to have basically the entire back to be a secondary screen to appear transparent, blend with tables and desktops, etc.

 

After that it's harder to tell because well everything is screen and every sensor is under the screen so who knows where they'll go then.
