Derbauer reported that intel messed up the 9th gen processors by using solder as it doesn't perform as expected and delidding and liquid metal are also now difficult. He also noted that the die and the PCB are larger now. What are your thoughts on the topic.

Is there a tldw? How "bad" is the solder compared to LM? Die being bigger is a given, you have two more cores on essentially the same process they have to go somewhere. PCB I would have thought, by definition can't get bigger otherwise it wouldn't fit in the socket, or is there a misunderstanding here?

I'm not sure what he's expecting... Skylake is not a low-heat-output architecture, they get really hot when you push their frequency high. At the same time, 9900k is still an LGA 1151 CPU so the lid is small and area of heat transfer is nowhere near as big as the lower-heat-output AM4 Ryzen CPU.

 

Soldered lid does make it more difficult to go direct-die cooling, I suppose.

PCB is thicker not larger

Are we really expecting miracles now?

 

I don’t think anyone of us should expect Intel to cram in 2 extra cores into a CPU that’s based off a similar micro-arch used for a long while now that’s fabricated onto a refined version of a now-aging node and expect them to get away with cooler temps?

The chip itself is almost double the thickness too and de8auer states due to silicons poor thermal conductivity compared to copper if you sand the silicon off it should have much better temps

  • liquid metal average temp was 8C lower than sTIM.
  • PCB thickness goes from 0.87mm to 1.15mm (Haswell size)
  • Die is thicker (0.42mm vs 0.87mm)
  • The 9600k is the same die size, probably 2 cores disabled.
  • The 9600k drops also 8C after delidding. Sanding the die to make it thinner drops up to 5C more (with 0.2mm removed from the die).
  • His 9900K wasn't particularly good, tops at 4.8 with 1.52v. His 9600K would do 5GHz at 96C (Prime) without delidding.

My reading: the worse thermal transfer implied by the thicker die lead to sTIM, as paste would no longer cut it. Although der8auer wonders whether it's the opposite, i.e., they needed a thicker die to be able to solder it.

Welcome to the internet. Focus on every little detail that promotes your side, or degrades the other side.

 

Without the inside info, my prediction is simple: yes it'll run a little hotter as it has 33% more cores than 8700k/8086k. Offsetting that is solder, negating the need for most overclockers to think about delids. We don't know how much Intel has tinkered with the process, but let's assume it'll be no worse than 8000 series so 5.0 GHz on all cores isn't too much a stretch on air cooling, and if you get much above that, lucky you.

I saw you edit that in! Thinking more, the delid+LM improvement I got for Skylake/Coffee Lake were of the ball park 10C, less for the "best" core. 8C measured under what scenario? I generally use AVX2 P95 and I believe in previous videos he uses the less stressful non-AVX version. I would expect a smaller difference, unless he's offsetting that by a hotter OC. I don't think his numbers add up, but he's also very likely doing things differently than I would.

I have no clue, the graphs say "P95 12K". I'd have to watch again to see if he's more specific about the P95 setup, although probably not (as for the purpose of the video any standardize test would suffice).

Remember the Skylake-X phantom throttling claim? I think it was then he was saying he used non-AVX P95, something like version 26.x. We're on 29.x now.

They chose to go for more performance than power efficiency. All cores at 4.7 GHz, it's essentially factory overclocked. That is, if run a bit lower clock, the power would go down a lot. I guess they didn't want to settle for low 4.x GHz as that'll be too close in overall performance to 2700(X).

Based on his video, it seems like the TIM has little to do with the temps but it's more of a result of the thicker silicon of the die itself (0.42mm from the 8700k vs 0.87mm on the 9900k).
