Why did you buy an Android Phone?

AlTech

I used to have iPods, and I found iTunes gradually becoming worse and worse. I didn't want to be tied into that infrastructure.

Not to mention at the time, the whole one physical button, with the onscreen back button, really jarred with me. That's all changed these days but, I still prefer to have more dedicated buttons like android devices offer.

I hate apple as a company, I do not support their practice.

I have LG appliances so, yeah I figured if they make good tv's they make good phones.

Because I do not like Apple's products, I do not like their way of trying really frickin' hard to lock you into their stuff only and I do not want someone telling me which apps I am allowed to use, and I'm not made out of money and Android-devices are cheaper than Apple's ones, so that is also always a consideration for me.

As for which Android-devices I have: I have a OnePlus 3T as my phone, a Huawei Mediapad M8.0 LTE (though no sim-card installed in it) as my tablet, an NVIDIA Shield TV for movies/TV-shows on the big screen and the big screen itself is a Philips Android TV, though I can't remember its model-number.

I chose the OnePlus 3T because I just do not fucking need all the idiotic gimmicks of flagship-phones and I definitely am not willing to pay the prices they go for. A 1080p-display is perfect for phones, I wouldn't be able to see the difference between it and a 2160p-display, for example, anyways, 4GB RAM is plenty, it has a reasonable camera and the phone's built-quality is good. I just don't need anything more, and the phone cost less than half of what flagship-models cost, so it was a good choice and I have been very, very happy with it.

The Huawei I chose because an 8" display is not too large to be uncomfortable, but it's still large enough to be a lot better than my phone's display for consuming books, comics and such. It's also 1080p, and what I said above applies with it, too. I don't use the tablet much, it's just been sitting unused for months now, so it didn't make much sense to spend a lot of money on it, but at the same time, I spent just enough on it for it to be a comfortable choice for reading on.

The Shield TV is hands-down the best video-consumption device on the market, as far as I know, and considering the amount of movies and TV-shows that I collect, it was pretty much a no-brainer. Not regretted buying it even for a bit. That said, I only use it for movies/TV-shows, ie. Kodi and Netflix -- not games, not browsing, no social stuff.

The Philips TV, while an Android TV, is just a big display; I do not watch broadcast-media at all, so it just serves as a display for the Shield TV.

Price. I don't use my phone for too much stuff, so I just use a cheap phone. Using my old LG G4 now.

Because I don't need the latest and greatest overpriced device slightly better than last year just so I can browse reddit all day, something phones from 5 years ago can still do fine. Also, I can now connect my phone to my computer and transfer files without propriety software, holy shit it's the future. I also don't support Apple and their practices.

I ended up with the Essential phone. Last year's flagship specs for $300, not much to complain there.

Actually you can, the 4K displays even the 1440p one's are much more sharper than the 1080p but I agree with you, 1080p is enough for 6inch phones for now.

It is cheap but still good (in some cases).

I bought a Nexus 6 one year after launch to pair with Google's Project Fi. I bought the phone for 250USD. Cheap (but good) phone and a cheap (but good) cell provider has been heaven ever since I first made the decision. A one year old flagship that happened to flop became my escape from dumbphone hell. Fast forward three or four years and the thing is still kicking.

I know there are a lot of android phones that are decent performance for the price but there are also a lot of shitty android phones that people should avoid like the plague.

iPhones are great (for the most part) but they are way too expensive for me and Apple keeps getting rid of the features that I like... (finger print reader, headphone jack, bezels to hold onto the phone...)

One Plus 3T which will be replaced by a new Android by the end of the year. Either 6T, or Mate 20P or whatever.

I've always had android aswell, S2, S4, G4, 3T.

Reasons are:

- Cheaper

- more flexible, i.e. there's an App Drawer

- a lot of choices

- evolving faster than Apple with fast implementation of new and standalone features. Example is the gesture control

- Google assistant is quite nice.

- you don't have to mess around with iTunes

- much more fluid usage because you (usually) have 3 Buttons on the bottom and not 1.

- it's not apple

- many more?

I was forced to at first to be honest. AT&T was being a dick and wouldnt let me get an iPhone at all so I was like screw it ill get whatever my father had at the time. Turns out that was an S4 Active soooo :P. I genuinely came to like Android due to the S4. The freedom I had already ton top of the nice size upgrade from my iPod Touch 4th gen was amazing. The S4 single highhandedly converted me to the Android side so I understandably love the hell out of the S4. The point is I was forced to use an Android and ended up loving it xD

I agree here. My Xperia XZ is a 1080p screen, on a 5.2-inch display. I need to have my nose touching the screen, to be able to see the individual pixels. Up to a 6-inch display would be fine in this resolution, I'd give myself eye strain trying to see the benefits of a higher resolution.

If I could get a good deal, I would buy the 8+ but androids seem to get more discounts and since I'm not that much of a heavy user, I could live with androids. However I must say I am impressed with how the 6s plus aged, right now I don't really need anything that performs better than that. I've been using the One Plus One as well for about 4 years now and its gotten quite slow. I don't know if its the ROM (still on the CM that came with it). Tried doing a reset, and still it just doesn't feel as smooth as it used to. It also gets a lot hotter than it used to be. Wonder what's causing that. So right now I'm looking at the Pixel 3 (when it comes out) or the P20 Pro. I might still get the 8+ if I get a good deal, but that ain't gonna happen, so, pretty much have to settle for an android.

I have an Essential personal phone and my work gave me a iPhone 8plus for my 2nd phone.  Love the Android Pie and the way I can set it up to be reflect who I am and work just the way I want it to.  It plays the game like like to play and has the app I need to work.  Strangely enough the Apple phone does not have the apps I need for work (WIFI network analyzers on iPhone are weak sauce) so I have to use my personal phone for some work stuff.  But the Apple camera is better.  It should be for the money we had to pay for this heavy brick with a sad 90s style OS.  But the apple also wins for Hot spot, battery life and setting up team members Maas360 clients is faster on the Apple devices than Android, but not as easy to remove.

I just like how it works much better than ios/apple.

Like how you always have a back button on the bottom of the screen, a better place to have it than how it is on most apps in iOS/apple, aka a button in the top of the screen. (Talking back button not home button)

Also a big reason for me when I got this phone, fingerprint sensor on the back. It's just so much better than having it on the front. It's a total must for me.

I don't care that much if it's open source or not. If I did I wouldn't use windows only on my desktop.

I don't really customize android much.

I do highly prefer stock android to for example Samsung Android.

Also Android phones aren't as expensive as iOS/Apple. I have Nexus 6p currently and it was a really good phone for the price. I have had it quite a while now.

Next phone I will get will probably be even lower priced than what Nexus 6p was when I got it. If I where to buy a phone now it would probably be Nokia 7 plus.

A thing that didn't matter at the time because all phones have it, but will matter in the future phones I get, is headphone jack. This comes from a person that don't actually use the jack that often currently, mostly because I am in a situation where I bike everywhere.

So, I saw Linus' "Why did you buy an iPhone?" post and I watched videos criticizing his iPhone XS video.

About half of my friends use iPhones and half use Android.

Although I've seen many Uni students using iPhones.

And I figured I'd make a post in response for Android.

Why did you buy an Android Phone?

I'll start with my reasons:

* Android AOSP is Open Source software - I fundamentally dislike proprietary software and if given the choice between something which is open source and something which is propreitary, 9 times out of 10 I would pick the open source choice if it was as good as the proprietary choice.

* Android is customizable - I can change things to suit my liking and I have complete control over my phone.

* Android is just so much more intuitive - When I want to do something on Android, it's simple and intuitive. On IOS it takes me several times as long in order to do something and just is inefficient and not intuitive.

Other than Android OEMs not providing inadequate android OS support with most lasting 2 years officially with many being possible to support for many years unofficially, and Google's data collection, there's not much wrong with Android imho.

And yet so many pick IOS over Android.

*** I'd love to hear from current Android users - For bonus points, please list what Android Device(s) you're currently using and why you are using that particular one *** ?

My two cents on why I choose Android.

- I can customize it to my liking and I'm not chained to a certain look

- microSD (how is it that Apple STILL doesn't have this?)

- Not tied to one ecosystem

- Price to feature ratio (able to get a cheaper smartphone with more practical features)

- Aftermarket parts easier to obtain

Of course it's not perfect and frankly, the one category Apple wins imo is software support. Most manufacturers forget about their devices after a couple years while Apple is pretty good about the longevity of their stuff. I currently own an LG V20, just bought a few days ago, for less than $200. It's got storage expansion, headphone jack, decent camera, beautiful display, MIL Spec rating and to top it off, the single greatest feature that the current smartphone trend is ignoring: REMOVABLE BATTERY. With that single feature my device will be powered for YEARS, so in terms of best bang for your buck you can't go wrong. I don't upgrade every year or feel the need to, nor can I afford it.

The iPhone lacks the majority of the features I want in a phone when it comes down to it, and even if I was a billionaire I still wouldn't buy their phones because they are just not a good investment.

First of all, let me say that I barely use my phone, and do not have service on it. I have a Galaxy Note 4, which I enjoy for it's size, stylus, headphone jack, screen resolution, physical home button, removable battery, and upgradable storage. I also use a custom ROM- AICP running Android 8.1. Android gives me more freedom of choice, such as being able to change my icons and launcher. Rooted Android gives me more options like being able to edit my hosts file so I can block ads, and use my phone to boot GNU/Linux ISO's. I also love that I do not have to use the Play Store to get my apps. I can use third party repositories such as F-Droid, this can allow people to make a ethical decision to use as little proprietary software as possible. There is also the case of overcoming the censorship of the Play Store- such as how they do not allow gambling or porn apps and how they have removed apps such as Gab for "hate speech".

Let me start by saying I ended up on Android by accident, I was trying the buy the 3GS but the carrier signal was none existent in my flat and most of my area, so I they offered me the HTC Hero which ran Android 1.6.  I got into rooting, and emulators within 6 months; fast forward 8 years, I am on Android 8.1 Oneplus 3T.

I stayed on Android due to customization, privacy lock down with Lineage OS, and wealth of apps including F-Droid (open source apps).

I have had a 6S plus and 7 plus; apps are good, but customization, intuitiveness, and battery life sucks ass. Camera was brilliant!

I only have one big reason why I've been using Android for all this while, and it's a pretty big one.

The choice factor.

What do I mean?

  • The choice of what features I want
  • The choice of what type of phone I want
  • The choice of how I want my software UX to look like (mostly Samsung phones)
  • The choice of whether I want an iPhone wannabee or something different.

I've been using Android phones for the past 7-8 years, starting with the old Nexus One, before moving on to the Galaxy S2, then S3, HTC One M7, Galaxy Note3, LG G3, ASUS Zenfone 2, LG G4, Moto Z, Galaxy Note7, Huawei Honor 8 Pro and the Galaxy Note8. It's this choice factor that's kept me in.

But said choice factor is also diminishing, with every higher end Android that doesn't say "SAMSUNG" now aping the notch and also removing the headphone headphone jack in most cases sans Samsung and LG.

I would just like to point out that this is perceptive warping here. By its nature you can customize, on mostly a surface level, to be what you want it to be. That does not mean that it makes a whole lot of sense for everyone else using it.

To me, iOS is intuitive and with iOS 12 I can literally make shortcuts to macro my entire workflow. As one example I could say "Hey Siri, going home" or click a button in a widget and my phone can automatically turn off wifi/bluetooth, turn on low power mode, open my transit app, and fire up a playlist. That is just the surface of what Shortcuts can do

Times have changed, Android is no longer the King of productivity and has certainly never been the king of intuitiveness.

Just beeing able to automate some stuff with shortcuts doesn't make it more intuitive.

It would literaly be not less untuitive, when the Camera settings are in the System settings. You have to leave your camera app, to change the resolution / fps you shoot photos / videos with. That makes absolutely zero sense .

How you share content systemwide is handled much better on Android, than on iOS too.

If i want to go to Wifi settings, i can just pull down the Quicksettings, hold the wifi symbol, and i'll be right there. on iOS i have to go to the homescreen, system settings, Wifi.

While Features like Siri Shortcuts are indeed quite nice in many aspects, other things in iOS could not be handled any worse / dumber.

Overall, iOS is not more intuitive than Android tbh. And not less. And this has been the case for many years now, since at least Andorid 4.4~.

1 Feature alone doesn't suddenly make the whole OS more intuitive.
