What can I do with a bunch of old HDDs.

Hi, everyone.

I like collecting hdd, plugging them into my pc and read the files. Right now, I have about eight of them, ranging from IDE 2GB only to SATA 160Gb. They are all fully functional.

but I’m about to move house so I will have trouble packing them, and I don’t want to waste them. What can I do with them?

Hopefully this is the right forum to post this as I relied on it recently and don’t have any other forum accounts.

Well, you could use them for storage (the SATA ones at least, IDE not so much) or whatever, but not much else. After all, that's what disks are for. If you're more concerned about moving them safely, you can pack them in bubble wrap or install them in a PC, just disconnected.

They probably don't have much use due to their low capacity, and due to their age I wouldn't trust them with any data.

 

Opening one up so you can see how a HDD works might be an interesting little project.

the only thing these are good for is to open them and take out the strong magnets for something else.

Those hard drives are probably older than you.

They should have a manufacture date printed on the label.

If you no longer need them, donate them to a thrift store or drop them off for recycling (which is probably what the thrift store would do with them). Those drives are pretty much obsolete, especially the IDE. You will have a tough time finding anyone still using computers with IDE. The others are too small to be of much, if any, use to anyone. Heck, I don't even use HDDs anymore and I won't even buy a SATA SSD smaller than 2TB.

Lol I won’t buy a ssd larger than 1 TB  because it cost more than a gtx 1060

You can always use them for target practice. Alternatively sell them. Those old 2GB drives are still bough by DOS enthusiasts for their old systems.

A tech friend likes to use the motors in his projects.

And magnets.
