For new Macs, I'd expect the fabled 'low-cost' 13-inch MacBook, a new Mac mini (with more pro options) and maybe refreshes for both the 12-inch MacBook and the standard iMac.

The iMac Pro is actually pretty good for what it is, LTT hysteria notwithstanding.  It's the "what it is" that not everyone likes.  It's amazing if you're an indie producer, or want a fast workstation you can bring to a studio without lugging multiple parts (or consuming a lot of physical space).  But it's not the headless, expandable tower you'll want if you're interested in performance at all costs, or just want expansion beyond Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C.

It’s definitely cool but it can’t be categorized or a replacement to what the Mac pros are. It’s in its own category

It would be interesting if Apple will add the functionality in the future of using the iPad Pro 10.5” (especially the 120 Hz variable refresh rate w/ Apple Pencil) as a drawing tablet that is hooked to a Mac via Bluetooth or USB C for artists to use especially now that Photoshop for the iPad is in beta testing.

At this point the current Air is far from competitive at its price point. I mean the crap screen along combined with a crappy throttled dual core make that thing a turd compared to every ultrabook on the market right now. 

 

Its still selling like crazy though and I dont get it.

I won't deny that the 12-inch MacBook is a bad deal, certainly now that it's over a year old -- although I wouldn't pit it against a 15-inch desktop replacement rig.  That's akin to saying a sports car is better than an SUV because it goes faster.  It does, but the SUV will do things the sports car simply can't.  If I needed a laptop for taking notes and writing reports, I'd take the MacBook over that Sager all day, every day.

 

Besides, the Air is supposed to be the opposite of niche -- it's the mainstream system that covers most people's needs at a reasonable price.  It's the laptop many Windows vendors have been trying to replicate for the past several years.  The problem is that Apple had a few years where it was clearly letting much of the Mac lineup slide, and the Air has been one of the victims.  If you believe the rumors, Apple will hew to the spirit of the Air, although I wouldn't count on it just being an Air with a modern CPU and display.

That laptop doesn't look like a desktop replacement, though. It's reasonably portable.

 

The only thing that could suggest that it's a desktop replacement is the 3+ hour battery life

Comparisons you mention are not accurate. There is nothing the Macbook does that the Sager cannot do other than portability (questionable at best) and battery life. Saying a laptop cannot take notes and write reports is you reaching for an excuse.

15 inches, 5.5 pounds and 3-hour battery life?  Yeah, it's a desktop replacement... it's just one that won't completely crush your arm while you're carrying it.  If I can't use it away from a wall outlet for more than a brief stint, it's not really meant as a travel machine.

Just for context, that machine is lighter than my old 14-inch machine, which wasn't big by any means, and also identical to the pre-Retina MacBook Pro 15", which I never found overly heavy.

 

I can see the 3 hour battery life being desktop-replacement worthy, but not the weight or size, especially since an actual desktop replacement is twice as heavy.

 

I wouldn't call it an ultraportable (very far from it), but from size and weight alone, I wouldn't call it a desktop-replacement either, unless you throw the battery into the mix.

Comparisons you mention are not accurate. There is nothing the Macbook does that the Sager cannot do other than portability (questionable at best) and battery life. Saying a laptop cannot take notes and write reports is you reaching for an excuse. 

This is a portable computer.  If it's better at the "portable" part, that's an advantage.  And I'm sorry, but if a laptop weighs less than half as much and gets over three times the longevity, you will notice that difference.  If I were still in university, I would much, much rather have that MacBook in my bag than that Sager.

 

Also, I never said that the Sager couldn't handle writing notes and reports.  I said that the MacBook is better-suited to the task.  If you had to work on a must-finish report and weren't going to be near a wall outlet for a while, which would you rather choose -- the MacBook that lets you finish the report, or the Sager that will die before you're halfway through?

When the current design was new, yes it absolutely was.  The problem is that Apple hasn't devoted enough attention to the Air over the years, and it's really hurting as a result.  The hope is that the new model will drag the basic Air formula (13-inch screen, light weight, moderate performance, great battery life) into the modern era.

You're right in that it's not some 8-pound behemoth of a thing, but when the battery life is just three hours... yeah, it's a desktop replacement.  It's not meant to leave your desk for more than very brief stints, like checking email on vacation or playing a short burst of gaming in the living room instead of the den.

Quite honestly though, this machine is almost suited for me

 

It's got the performance to smash through games, the CPU power to handle mass exports from Capture One, a decent-enough display so that color grading isn't too tricky, and epic battery life that means I won't have to keep it plugged in 24/7.

 

The best part? 4.5 pound weight.

See, that's more like it if you want something that's more of a true portable machine.  Apple's laptops are better in terms of raw longevity, but the Gigabyte Aero seems to strike a good balance.  I just think it's important to avoid falling into the mindset of some hardcore gamers where a PC's worth is based solely on how well it runs the latest games.

 

With that said, I should add: the 12-inch MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Air are both seriously due for revisions.  I wouldn't be surprised if Apple scrapped the 12-inch model altogether, since it always struck me as a design based more around ideological purity than real-world uses.  It's still better than that Sager for writing reports, though. ?

I dont get where you keep getting this from. Lois Rossman proves time and time again that isnt true with their design choices. If you want a long lasting laptop you buy a Lenovo.
