Getting 2080ti, dunno if I should go 1440 Ultrawide for 4k, any insight?

I'm getting a 2080ti in the near future.

With that said I am still on a 1920x1080 display (technically triples), so it is time for that to go.

Problem is I am torn between a 1440 ultrawide or a 16:9 4k. Ideally, I'd go 4k ultrawide but that's not an option yet... I should also add, I cannot pick up on a 60-144hz difference, I have tried and I just don't see anything drastically different, I notice my blacks are blacker at 144hz more than I do any increase in smoothness

I mostly game and just browse online with my machine. Do some hobby based photo editing at 24mp as well.

The only consistent thing I can tell between 144hz and 60hz are the deeper blacks on 60hz I have done blind FPS tests, with someone I know with a 144hz display selecting what refresh rate I play at and he could see the difference, I cant.

That alone should solidify getting the 4k. May as well go for beauty in the Ray Tracing if you can't see the difference in fps. Have fun!

I'd go for the ultrawide, they're nice because you can use them as multiple monitors if you need to look at several things at once.

What is actually supposed to go here? Some people put their specs, others put random comments or remarks about themselves or others, and there are a few who put cryptic statements.

The internal debate I am having is I love the ultrawide concept. I loved it as soon as I seen it (hell it is the reason I went triples until I found out the drawbacks of that...) If I could I would go ultrawide 4k but..that doesn't seem to be a thing yet.

I went 21:9 once years ago to never leave it again, 21:9 is superior in every way I can think of, 4k is just dumb personally speaking because you have diminishing returns compared to a 2560x1440p panel and 16:9 aspect ratio just sucks once you get used to ultrawide.

 

4k due to Windows scaling issues will realistically speaking give you identical virtual space as 2560x1440p, at 27 inches the screen side by side is identical aside what? some super sampling?please... it's sharp already and you won't have your eye ball touching the screen.

 

go ultrawide, have a much prettier and neat looking screen on top of your desk, enjoy extra real virtual space, have much more immersive experience on gaming with more eye candy... it's a no brainer, I'd write it more in depth if i wasn't busy,

No I am not, I have done multiple blind FPS tests and the only time I can pick up on any change was in doom rapidly rotating the camera multiple times in quick succession, it was easier to get disoriented I found. Other then that very specific situation I can't pick up on a change.

You can see yourself each display is on 144hz. Hell I used to use them with 3d vision which you NEED to have on 120+ to work and used it many times without issue. Unless you can telepathically see what im seeing don't tell me what I can see. It has 0 bearing on the question I am posing.

Have you tried going to a microcenter or local computer store and looking at monitors side by side?

Unless you are specifically referring to looking between ultrawides and 4k, in that case, no I haven't for multiple reasons. 

  • Don't live near any shops
  • no promise they will have ultrawides/4ks setup
  • No idea what models will be set up/how they would compare to each other.
  • even if they do have comparable models, setup I probably can't do any gaming on them.

Depends on your eyesight and viewing distance.  I frequently dock things to four corners of my 4K display with 100% DPI scaling (as I mostly use Linux and scaling is poorly supported), zooming on a per-application basis where necessary.

 

That gives far more real estate than 1440p would.

Last time I was tested I was 20/20 and im currently sitting.... I dunno...20" from my monitor

Do what I did & do both.

 

My computer with the i7 8700k & GTX 1080 ti runs my 34" 3440 X 1440 monitor.

My computer with a i7 8086k & GTX 1080 ti runs a 32" 4k monitor. 

 

When I get a RTX 2080 ti I will go SLI with the 1080 tis.

 

I have the 2 systems a few feet apart and I can honestly say I don't Know which one I like best.

Ultrawide.  Your eyes are set for panoramic viewing (and being a predator, that is NOT a coincidence for the monitor naming!).

 

Did I mention Ultrawides?  

 

One note: refresh rate doesn't effect black levels, so that's simply a setting of the monitors you're viewing. 60Hz doesn't make blacks blacker.

 

It's really something only you can decide, since that's an "experience" type of thing.  Both will utilize your beefy GPU, so it really comes down to what size you ultimately want to sit in front of.

If you have enough desk space and don't care about anything over 60hz, then go 4k. The 43" monitors aren't too bad. I have a Samsung 49" 4k TV as my main screen and I can't go without it. I used to have a 34" 120hz 1440p ultrawide but my taste has changed. I want a higher resolution for gaming over refresh rate now.

Also @jstudrawa im not convinced I have seen this behaviour before. Crysis had a bad habit when you ran over HDMI to force displays at 24 hz and it did the game thing on my TV as my monitors where it would make blacks VERY light...they were outright gray, even though we are talking totally different manufacturers.

In all honesty, i dont see why so many people have a hard time deciding between 4k 16:9 and 1440 ultra wide. You can get both in 1 monitor.

As i said in my last post, what ever size ultra wide you 'would' get, just grab a 4k 16:9 that is 2" bigger and you can then have BOTH.

If you want to play in 1440p ultra wide u set the resolution to 144op ultra wide, if u then want to play 4k 16:9 u just go back to native.

 

Even i do this on my 42" Plasma (my PC screen), its only 1920 x 1080, but when i want to play with a wider aspect i set the res to 1920 x 820 , and if i want i can turn on 4x DSR (3840x1640)
