True but the point is that they don't have anything special - there's plenty other phones out there with that SoC and thus the same performance, in theory, so what makes this a "Gaming phone" and those not?  Not the SoC I guess, and that's a fairly important piece.

higher refresh rate display, better sound (since on most phones screen ratio>acoustics), sustained performance via better cooling implementations, (in the Asus case) I/O/button selection and design

 

I mean it isn't actually that unreasonable tbh.

Yeah, those are all valid things that do help the gaming pitch (even if they wouldn't go amiss on a normal device either...)

It just seems a bit weak to me that they share an SoC with so many other devices though.   When Nvidia did the shield tablet and rocked the market, not only in per dollar performance but performance period, that was clearly a gaming device.  This just doesn't seem like the same thing.

Absolutely. But custom SoC's are expensive, and they really only have whatever IP they can licence. Qualcomm doesn't offer anything higher, and Nvidia hasn't kept up tegra for mobile. Mediatek doesn't have the GPU tech to compete right now. Apple is only now matching the raw power of Qualcomm's gpu (even if lower screen resolution and lower api overhead previously meant they could often game better), and even so, obviously they aren't licensing anything. 

 

Maybe if these phones take off, you might see enough of a market to warrant a separate tapeout, but that seems unlikely, because anything bigger will also just get thrown in the standard flagship phablets as well.

 

It would really take such a radical change in design goals or form factor such that these gaming branded devices could run SoC's that normal phones simply couldn't (from power I'd expect), AND the market would have to have a big enough desire for it. At which point, you probably would see standard phone brands embracing that form-factor instead as well, thus negating the process.

 

If Microsoft didn't flop so hard repeatedly on mobile markets, they would be the perfect company to break that mold (ala Surface Book etc), but alas they did, and so are very weary of trying.

Razer Phone doesn't interest me but I can see others embracing it. I don't need to play mobile games at the highest spec possible. But clearly some people like that because there's a second phone.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

It's a decent upgrade and I love the 16:9 along proper speakers and no notch than other vomit of phones out there. 

It's so funny that Asus ROG phone and Razer Phone are one of the top best looking phones this year.

On the contrary, many do actually. Specially vs any phone with a notch. For what they are, they're not bulky and oversized plus as as I said, they don't have the dreaded notch! Any phone that has it is automatic fail. Most of them look more or less the same anyway.

I think it’s funny that a cutesy iPhone XR in a coral or yellow hue is probably better for gaming because of iOS and the A12 chip. And yet gamers wouldn’t want to be caught dead with an Apple product. 

 

But it what do I know? I am still using my “dated” iPhone 7 like peasant.

Also there is The Bezels that Razer utilize for speakers, but also room to hold the phone while gaming, which arguably is important. Also 120hz display (very nice feature).

Do you mean Galaxy S6? iPhone 7 is better than iPhone 6S, unless headphone jack is a deal breaker. I'm using the 7, I wouldn't say it's outdated either. I haven't really noticed any slow-down as of yet. Still functioning like brand new.

It’s not as good as the 6S!? That’s pretty delusional. Is it because of the headphone jack!? It’s not like it’s the most crucial feature like wheels on a car. Get over yourself. The iPhone 7 has a better screen, better camera, way better speakers, better performance and the haptic vibrator engine is second to none. This thing...vibrates like nothing else! The iPhone 7 won’t ever be loved because it killed the headphone jack for everyone.

No I think it's just a typo, obviously the newer model is better than the last model. I think it's either just a typo or we're interpreting it wrong.✌️
