You'll never match it 1:1

 

But I can say that the books that the games are based on are just as good as the in game writing, if not better.

God I hated those games. Never understood why people like Bioware so much. They have decent character writers, but the actual story is boring, bland and unoriginal. The gameplay is much the same.

Mass Effect 1 has the best Story in Gaming History.

Not really up to that level but there are some other good single player games out there like Witcher 2, Kotor 2, Dragon Age: Origins, and the Deus Ex series.

Not many other games meet the same level of storytelling. I personally got a Witcher 3 feeling playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, but I've only played for 2 hours.

But remember: You have to play through the story (at least) 3 Times. (due to different angles. The second time is from the other side, the third is a completely different one)

 

Other things that come to mind are on Playstation 4 like God of War for example, maybe Horizon Zero Dawn (has good story but is rather predictable at times, at others its not).

 

And of Course some Final Fantasy Games like X, XII, XIII isn't as good as the predecessors, as is XV...

Well, check divinity Original Sin 2. very different style, but the story is very rich and the game is excellent all in all. one my my favorites alongside with Witcher 3

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

If you're all about storytelling, old school CRPGs like Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity, and Divinity Original Sin are going to blow your mind. They're essentially like Witcher 3 storywise, but you aren't constrained by Geralt of Rivia's moral compass and can play any kind of person you like. 

 

StarCraft 1 (and its expansion, Brood War) have quite possibly the best story ever told in gaming IMHO. It's been remastered as well. StarCraft 2 story is trash tho. 

 

If it must be an ARPG, then Fallout: New Vegas is pretty much where it's at. You can literally play that game 5 times and get different experience every time.

You want storytelling? Then JRPGs are where you should look at. 

FF VII is all-time masterpiece. 

Tales of the Abyss has great character development.

Grandia I&II have great stories as well (haven't played Grandia III myself).

And I strongly suggest to look at Vindictus. It has insane storyline for a dungeon crawler

Witcher 2 was pretty decent. Hated Witcher 1 for the same reason I hate Dragon Age.

The 2 newer Deus Ex games were pretty great, but the originals are far too clunky for me to enjoy without nostalgia goggles.

HZD had some good intrigue and even story, but it's pretty hidden inside texts, story missions, and behind frankly average characters. Gameplay is pretty solid though, and sound design and graphics are insanely good.

I have to agree with Life is Strange, though I only played the first episode (dunno where/why I got it)...

Between Life is Strange and Detroit - Become Human, its clearly Detroit. And Life is strange is hardly any different.

That's actually false. I think more people don't like LIS than people that do. Beyond the hella awful French teenage American false slang dialogue the story isn't that great and the methods of storytelling are also pretty weak.

Best of all is that it was completely forgettable.
