That's hilarious. Just simply downloading a single game from Steam, PSN, NSO or XBL (e.g. Doom) will go over 15GB. Twitch streamers will go over 15GB.

If not even a terabyte a month is enough in America (see: Comcast) then why would 15GB a month be enough for Canada? And it's under the presumption that you're streaming content owned by them.

Fucking hilarious, really.

Part of me worries that their government will find this out, see potential profit, and find a way to implement it despite anyone with any real knowledge disagreeing with it.

Well assuming that Canada's feds aren't mostly old people who will whore out their vote to corporate money, then this probably won't happen.

Not sure how well we can make that assumption.

What about places of business? I know I stream music at work over my employers wifi (which we are allowed to do). Some people stream netflix whilst working.

Gonna have to tax companies as well....

Oh look that proposal disappeared.

Indeed, they pay our politicians salaries

I still thing we need to lock politicians salaries to the average individual income for their particular area. No gifts or campaign contributions allowed from businesses or those who own businesses.

Whatever, this whole thing is idiotic.

So I guess that means New Hampshire would have to pay state reps more than $200.

The real reason why Trump wanted to be president... Free money to do nothing but Tweet all day lol... Well I'm sure that is what he originally thought anyways...

But I agree, they should only get a national average not $300K+ because that was 5K less than the last person...

Not the national average, the average of the individual (not the household average) in the state, county, city, etc. that elected them. And on top of that they aren't allowed to receive gifts or campaign contributions.

$100 a year for a two-year term, so New Hampshire pays state representatives $200/term.

The average income for Caroll County, NH (as an example) is $49k/year.

I meant to say that. I think the average around me is 40K per person or 80K per household, which isn't the best per person but it still can pay off a house around 15 years assuming you have someone else paying the rest of the bills... Hell even household averages as a yearly bonus "IF the people like you", which forces them to do shit that make the people happy, and not some BS agenda that is 5% true to their campaign...

In short:

You have to pay extra tax if you go over 15 GB because they think that means you are watching their content.

Its really hard for me to avoid profanity its so insanely dumb. They are forced to do this? What about modernizing your business model(ditch drm, region locks, etc) and get back to reality with pricing? It pisses me off how some good for nothing parasites tries to freeload.

And what is this idiocy about "15 GB will be enough". It seems they never heard about steam, gog, battle.net, origin, etc....

if people have to pay a tax anyway then piracy should be legal

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

Words can't describe how incredibly screwed up and out-of-touch that assumption is.

However, SCGC doesn’t see the problem and believes that 15 gigabytes are enough. People who want to avoid paying can still use email and share photos, they argue. Those who go over the cap are likely streaming not properly compensated videos.

So anyone who uses more than 15GB must be streaming music?

Uhh... What about everything else people use the internet for, like Netflix, downloading Steam games, Porn, Twitch, Windows Updates, Porn, etc?

If artists aren't happy with the deal they're getting from Youtube, Spotify, etc... Then don't host your content on those platforms.

I do sometimes wonder how much revenue the distributors and artists make from their youtube videos, especially when you see a Katy Perry or Taylor Swift video with 1+ billion views. The ad revenue they generate from that can't be insignificant, not to mention whatever product sponsorship deals they bake in to those videos such as driving XYZ model car in the video clip.

The reason they want this tax is they feel like those comapnies do not pay enough:

Quote

The music composers argue that this is warranted because composers miss out on public performance royalties. One of the reasons for this is that online streaming services are not paying as much as terrestrial broadcasters.

That actually raises quite the legal conundrum.  Although our systems are really good at just ignoring such things, I am sure there are some very smart lawyers out there who would love to argue such a tax law would remove the arbitrary nature of piracy and the internet. By maintaining that all internet users had paid a tax on the grounds they have involved themselves with the acquirement of content,  the tax on said acquirement now make sit a legitimate act.

Yep, same argument going on by us too because of the levy on empty media(includes anything from floppy to SDD and built in storage)...

Why is it always the music industry?

Unlike other industries, the music industry has actually suffered with the Internet and piracy.    Because of this bands are getting less, record companies are getting worse and demanding more, manufactured music and manufactured content is out of control. Once upon a time getting your record into a shop was enough to live off, now you have to sell out shows every other week if you don't want to have to work a 9-5er.

It is not a coincidence that mainstream music took an incredible nose dive inversely proportionate to internet growth.

I know it sounds like BS, but unlike movies and games, the dive in revenue is real and cannot be explained by any other condition of the industry.
