Ive ordered 4 300GB Hard drives and caddies for my server, thats enough to create a RAID 5 array with, which counts me for 1 drive loss. If at a later date i wish to upgrade these drives i could switch to a 1 TB right? i could always treat a drive as a loss and put a bigger one and let it re-create itself?

Can you stop the order? Id stay away from those old slow drives.

For a 100 euro budget, id get the biggest drive you can, so probably a 4tb drive.

Do you know what raid card you have yet?

then your limited to 2tb drives. Thats not a great card

Id run dual 2tb drives. Personally id run raid 0 and just have a good backup.

Bigger drives are often a better value, use less bays, and are faster,

I simply do not need the storage, 3tb would be ample. And, I really can’t be pissed with a off site backup, id probably want that aswell.

How much space do you need again?

How about a single 2tb drive then.

3TB is fine. I’d want Raid 5 or 10 for redundancy though so maybe 3x 2TB drives?

Id still do 2 x 2tb drives and a backup.

The backup could just be something like a external hdd, and will be much better than redunancy. The chance of a hdd failure is low, and you will need the backup anyways.

But if something goes wrong it’s a big hassle....

Yea, but thats unlikely, probably less than 2% a year.  You can buy anouther drive if you want, but with that budget, I wouldn't bother.

And since this is a home server, im guessing uptime isn't the most important thing.

When I said the budget I meant per drive... and I meant what make/model should it be best? Raid 5 sounds convenient but what do you recommend I’m keen on having redundancy and might end up getting a other method of backup too, I’m a data freak I like to keep it secure ;D

IDK about prices there, but id go for wd red or ironwolf. Id go 2tb, its the max size, and there normally a much better value. Id get the cheaper of the two, there basically the same.

Id setup an external hdd for backup, cloud + off site hdd is a good idea aswell.

What about getting a new raid card? Do they make a difference to performance?

In proxmox you can just install samba and edit the config file or make a container with something like the turnkey and use a web gui.

Do you have it installed now?

Thanks, I assume i have to use the shell for all of it, no way out of that?...

There is a lot of shell stuff in linux, Id learn that if you want to use linux.

Most server stuff is using the command line as its much more powerfull than a gui and faster.

What switch do you have?

What is your goal with teaming?

There are many ways to do this, depending on your use case.

Biggest goal, faster speeds for moving files, i get about 103MB/s at the moment, thats using 1 line. My switch is: Netgear JGS524E
