LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Go to solution Solved by palespartan,

I figured I would take advantage of the fact this post hasn't been locked yet to spread the word about this years folding month.

Folding month 2019!!

See the thread for detail and don't forget to spread the word!!!

@leadeater you can now lock this one.

-Thanks

Not sure what's being going on the last day or so, my numbers seem a bit all over the place. Usually my figures are between about 80k and 130k for each 3 hour period but had a couple of very low ones and the one very high one. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could have caused this, all my systems are running constantly and not aware of anything that could have caused quite such a drop. Don't know where the high one came from either, could understand it coming after a low one if the figures hadn't quite registered right but seems weird that it came directly before a very low one.

On a slightly different note, I was desperately hoping that I could hit a million PPD but think that 992k is the closest I'm gonna get, I've thrown everything I can at it but with only a GTX1070 and a GTX750ti I don't think it matters how many CPUs I throw at it I won't quite get there. This is with 21 CPUs and I really can't manage any more than that. On the upside, I'll slow things down after this as like many others I'm having gaming withdrawal symptoms haha. All the office CPUs that are going and the 750ti will keep going (at least until I get caught at work) but my 1070 and 8600k are desperate for some Assassin's Creed Odyssey, some Forza and maybe even some Fifa (please don't hate me for that last one haha).

Congrats to @Ben Quigley on getting the 1080 as well. Couldn't think of anyone more deserving after the work you've put in on this side of things.

Thanks, I haven't been the best this month tbh. It's been a struggle in my personal life and there is more than me that made this work out!

She will be folding 24/7 as soon as I get her, I wonder what model I will get?

Now that the Folding Month is nearing its end and our thoughts are turning towards cleaning our dust filters and getting back to playing more games I hope that some of you participants will consider continuing to donate some of your idle computing power to Folding@Home.

I know I am looking forward to profiling my new video card and reducing the heat and noise in my basement.

If you, like me, have been running your systems full-tilt all month then you may not be aware that the normal way most people who fold full-time do so is at a reduced level to keep the noise, heat and electrical bills in reason!

GPUs all have a non-linear efficiency curve. They are typically 80% as efficient at their lowest power setting as their highest. As you push the card harder it requires increasingly higher amounts of power for the same increase in performance.

What I typically do when folding is to run my cards at only 10 or 20 watts above the minimum power level setting. This results in lower heat and noise and potentially less wear on the GPU fans as they can operate at a much lower speed. The interesting part is that though the GPU uses about 40% less power I only see a 15 to 20% reduction in the all-important Points-per-Day (PPD).

So instead of running the Power Slider all the way to the right in after-burner try the other end of the scale.

For Those CPU folding if you have a processor will lots of threads you can reduce your output simply by reducing the number of cores used for folding.

I splurge bought an x79 mobo with a quad-core xeon and 16 g of ram to put into a 4u case for my 3 "extra" gpu's to be folding 24/7 in a much less Jerry rigged system. (as much as I love what I am now calling the "mutually assured destruction" setup I have in the office.)

Oh you can ask @palespartan, I'm a 24/7 folder baby!

He found out the hard way ;)

Oh yeah. And on a 24/7 basis I cannot keep up. lol. But I am working my way back through the ranks to try to be just one spot below you.

I'm continuing going full bore at F@H and Bionic, and I have already purchased a Radeon RX 590 Nitro+ that shall assist my trusty old GTX 1060 but I have to wait until I can get this up and running because problem with some screw up with support for Linux.

You're better off throwing that RX at BOINC btw.

Yeah Wendel at Level one mentioned the issues with the Linux Driver support for the 590

I can't get away with much in my office. The Sage server and one of the Linux boxes are managed by 3rd parties so can't touch them. Have got one server running AV and a couple of bespoke systems that I've hijacked with an i7. There's also an old server with an i7 and the 750ti that I've recommissioned into a folding box. Other than that it's just installed the program onto some of the users desktops and every time someone gets a new machine now I'm going to make sure it's got at least an i3 and it can fold in the background while they're working. Most of them only use them for basic tasks so they won't notice that the CPU is being used elsewhere :D Might start seeing if I can sneak a low level GPU into the new builds as well to help things on their way.

Did try to convince my finance director recently that i 'needed' a 20 series card but he wasn't having any of it

Haha, anything helps. Just be careful with some low power-gpus folding while people are using the computer. I have a gt 730 that I did this on and I noticed it immediately. Heck, even my 1070 Ti folding while working can cause some problems. Folding while idle is the best way to go if you want to do it with GPUs, CPUs don't really care.

Just to make sure no one pushes too far. Folding is not worth getting fired for. Lol. That out of the way the only thing I'm taking from work hardware wise is the 4u chassis that was being thrown away. But it takes an atx motherboard so I bought the x79 setup used and the only thing work is paying for is the power.

Shoot! I missed the deadline. Been trying to deal with a virus on my dad's PC for the last couple days. Guess I went over my monthly data limit for nothing. Lol.

Hahaha! That does make me feel better. I didn't even hear about it until after that.

Well, people who made it in time: Know this - You did not stand alone. There were fools like me folding alongside you.

...Didn't want a badge anyway... sniff.

Huge write up tomorrow that will be both a post and edit to to the original post with official ranks for who came where as well as many shout outs for other achievements we feel are worth mentioning! But definitely a huge thank you to everyone who participated. As @Ben Quigley @Gorgon and I mentioned many times this is much bigger than any of us could have ever imagined!!!
