LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Go to solution Solved by palespartan,

I figured I would take advantage of the fact this post hasn't been locked yet to spread the word about this years folding month.

Folding month 2019!!

See the thread for detail and don't forget to spread the word!!!

@leadeater you can now lock this one.

-Thanks

Remember folks your daily production will vary depending on the complexity of the Work Units (WUs) you receive. My personal favorite is Project 11718 run by Rafal Wiewiora at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This WU tanks my performance by about 20% when I get one of these assigned.

The difficulty of processing a WU is bench marked by Stanford on a 9 year-old i5 running Linux as their standard test-bed. Even for GPU WUs like 11718 it estimates the difficulty using the test-bed's CPU.

It is difficult to predict how taxing a WU will be. The number of "Atoms" is a factor as is the number of single precision and double-precision calculations required. GPU shader (cuda) cores can handle single-precision calculations but GPUs have a limited number of cores capable of handling double-precision calculations. CPUs, on the other hand are much better at double-precision calculations. This is why WUs are run on the Stanford test bed to attempt to measure how taxing they will be and assign points based on their difficulty.

Just joined in.  Unfortunately, CPU only for me it seems, so I hope I make the minimums of this.  Got some decent GPUs, though not the most current, and they're generally also not "consumer".  Still though, a bunch of Xeon cores going to work for the cause.

I just want to thank all the LTT community members who are jumping in to help though the signup deadline for "official" participants has passed.

There's been a noticeable up-tick in production over the last two days and half-way through today at EOC we are at just over 100 Million points and so heading towards our first 200 Million point day.

Last week we produced 981,772,565 points which is just shy of the 1 BILLION points mark. With the existing participants and these folks jumping in to help if we can keep production up we may be able to unseat one of two of the teams currently ahead of us this month which is astounding.

Wait…so the call out went out on the WAN show to join in the competition when we're not eligible?

Got my old Big adv rig running again, turns out it can still put up decent numbers. I assume folding on linux is still better? If there's a noticeable difference I'll have to put Ubuntu or something on it instead of Windows.

Yeah I’ve heard 10-20% depending on the WU/hardware.

If your CPU only folding I'm not certain what the delta might be. The 15-20% is typically quoted for GPUs.

FWIW I moved a GTX 1060 from a Linux rig to my Windows 10 Daily driver when I got a 2070 and comparing the production between the 2 systems on identical Work Units it seems to be performing about the same. So the whole Linux thing might be more applicable for higher end GPUs that require data to be moved more frequently on the PCIe bus to keep the GPU fed.

Yeah, in this situation it would be CPU only. A pair of old 1366 hex core xeons. When I was doing this as a hobby I know you had to run linux to get the x64 client and bigadv, wasn't sure if that's still the deal. I'm going to have to do a little research, all of my knowledge is from years ago.
