Everybody expected it when Nvidia announced the GeForce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti at Gamescom. But Nvidia still pulled off a surprise, revealing the GeForce RTX 2070 at the same time—albeit without any concrete launch details whatsoever. Now, mere days before the slightly delayed RTX 2080 Ti hits the streets, Nvidia has announced release date information for the GeForce RTX 2070.  

The GeForce RTX 2070 will launch on October 17, Nvidia’s GeForce account tweeted today. The Founders Edition model will cost $599 on GeForce.com, with prices from third-party partners like EVGA, Asus, and Gigabyte starting at $499—at least in theory. In reality, we’ve seen custom cards treat the Nvidia Founders Edition cost as the true price baseline when new GPUs launch.  

 

The timing of the launch is interesting. GeForce RTX 2080 reviews proved divisive: Benchmarks showed it performing neck-and-neck with the GTX 1080 Ti in traditional games. Worse, the cutting-edge technologies that Nvidia’s radical Turing GPU was built for—real-time ray tracing, Deep Learning Super Sampling, and more—aren’t available in traditional games yet (although several games have pledged RTX support). Nvidia says the first ray traced games will appear about a month after the GeForce RTX 2080’s September 20 launch, when the underlying DirectX Raytracing API comes to Windows in the October 2018 update.  

 

But will ray tracing be ready for the GeForce RTX 2070’s launch? That’s the big question. October 17 is about a month after the RTX 2080’s launch. Microsoft hasn’t announced a firm release date for October 2018 Update. 

Spitballing off how the GeForce RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti compare to their predecessors, the GeForce RTX 2070 might wind up matching the performance of the GTX 1080 in traditional games. If that’s the case, the situation would match the RTX 2080 versus GTX 1080 Ti dilemma. You’ll be paying the same amount—or likely more—for the same level of traditional game performance, 2.5 long years after the GTX 1080’s debut. If ray tracing and DLSS aren’t available by the time the GeForce RTX 2070 launches, buyers will once again be asked to make a leap of faith in paying that premium for Turing’s future-facing features.  

 

Fingers crossed ray tracing ships before October 17. In the meantime, here’s a refresher on the GeForce RTX 2070’s core specs:

I've been waiting for this, the mid range card, but if NVidia continues their price increases, we might eventually have to settle for a 3060 (whenever the heck that comes out)

That is a great price.  The 1080 GTX was like 700 dollars couple months back ago.  This 2070 will wipe the floor with the 1080.  Go for it and try to get it with no tax and free shipping if you can.  500 bones and 4k gaming youll get.

yeeh 700 but the msrp was like 550. The 2070 will suffer the same fate, but after some time, so yeah go get it.

a 2070 will have about the power of a 1080, and remember, a couple months ago, almost all GPU's were still recovering from mining prices.

I doubt that you'll be able to find any cards at 500$ just like you can't find any 2080/2080ti's at msrp at the moment.

On top of that the price itself is too much too, a gtx 970 was 'only' 329$, 1070 was 379$ and now we're at 500$ for a 2070 just 2 years later. Can't image what the next series will cost if it keeps continuing like this.

This has to be a joke right we all know the $500 price is like a unicorn at this point look at the prices of the 2080 and 2080 ti all above the founders edition price. Also I can find all kinds of 1080's for under $500 and 1080 TI's for only $30 more than the founders edition price what a joke of a launch by Nvidia!

No no it's not I can find plenty of 1080s for $450 and some for less than $400. Also that $500 price is a lie none of the other 20 series cards are going for cheaper than the founders editions infact they go for more.

This is hilarious. It's delayed because it would have eaten a massive chunk into the preorders of the 2080 and 2080ti and no SLI support as people would buy 2 for the price of a 2080 and get better performance.

I have  a GTX 950 and game at 1080p with a 144 hertz monitor. I play Path of Exile just fine, this seems like an upgrade, is it worth it for me?

Yeah except they were telling us 1080p 60fps with ray tracing on the 2080ti.

 

Otherwise this is just meh. No NVlink to eat into 2080ti sales and looks like there gonna be 1080 performance for $100-$150 more. 

 

This launch has been kinda BS, but then again "how much of your life would like to have not been ray traced?"

 

If and a big if, it actually comes to be in real life and be mainstream. AND not be 1080p 60fps if your lucky with a $1200 card.

BF V may have tunable RTX to basically change the raytracing resolution seperate from the raster resolution. A developer stated this was in the works in a digital foundry video. Other games may do the same or just hide it behind a slder or low/med/high choice

Sad, i expected this card to perform better than 1080. 

 

900 series = GTX 960 min SLI

1000 series = GTX 1070 min SLI

2000 series = RTX 2080 min SLI

3000 series = RTX 3080 Ti min SLI?

If the RTX 2080 is an indication, I wouldn't bet a lot on this card outperforming a 1080. It'll more than likely match it.
