i5 8400 or i7 7700

Quick question.

So im planning to build a new PC, with the purposes of gaming (such as gta online, PUBG, dota 2, csgo, etc.) and also, video and photo ediitng, and maybe streaming (?)

So in order to complete my build (with GTX 1060 6GB and 16 GB RAM) which CPU is better to complete it .. i5 8400 or i7 7700 ?

What budget/country? What hardware did you already buy if any?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

i5 8400 should end up cheaper and a little bit better. Make sure you get a 300 series mobo tho

If you want to stream you might want an R5 2600 instead though. For the other things an 8400 would be a bit better.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Hopefully you haven't bought your motherboard yet otherwise your mind has been made up for you lol... I would go with the 8400, although it depends on your budget, etc etc etc. As the others said, consider ryzen as an option

Basically what Street said. Intel has a steep advantage over AMD in a few games, but not in the games you mentioned really. (CSGO favors intel, but its already over 200 FPS anyways). If you want to stream you should 100% look at the R5 2600. The i5 8400 might do OK streaming, but the 2600 will drop less frames in the long run.

Well those chips won't work on the same board.

Also look at the amd ryzen chips.

Is that $1500 in the US?  Because you could easily afford a Ryzen 8 core

Lord no, not for streaming. You want the most cores possible for streaming, within reason of course. Ryzen 5 or 7 is easily better there

Well, he is asking a question about 7700 vs 8400, to which I would say 8400.

If you expand your options besides those two, I would agree that a Ryzen 2600 or 2700 would be an even better choice. 2700 is what I would go with given your use case, 8 cores 16 threads will be amazing for video editing. If that is out of your budget, the 2600 is still better for video editing with 6 cores 12 threads, versus only 6 cores 6 threads for the 8400.

And honestly, if gaming is the primary use, and other tasks secondary, and it is within your budget, the i7 8700K is probably the best option of all. (for now) Very good IPC, and 6 core, 12threads. Faster in games than the 2700, but 2 less cores, 2700 wins for productivity. And 2700 is better value for your money.

So it just depends on whether gaming or productivity is more important to you, and what your budget is.

That being said, intel 9th gen is literally 2 weeks away, so it is better to wait right now and NOT buy ANY Intel CPU at the moment.

Why?

I saved a few bucks going for a B360.

I had that doubt after seeing a video from UFD tech, i checked with superposition benchmark and it looks like everything is fine.

It probably has to do with individual motherboards, but if you have a test I can run to double check ask, I'll try.

As far as i Know the Z chipset is needed or suggested for overclocking and advanced features, but does not hinder performances.

Not really, any b360 and the stock cooler will suffice for the i5 8400, the i7 8700 may require a better cooler and the VRM on h310 boards aren't ideal for it yes but for the i5 there's nothing to worry about.

The i5 8400 is a great value CPU, in fact the best value CPU from Intel right now as it'll be enough to maximize the potential of a GTX 1070 Ti without issue in gaming while it's 6 cores will be helpful on video editing and alike.

But if you'll do more professional work than game, and a GTX 1060 is as high as you'll go GPU wise I also would consider a Ryzen 7 2700 based build on a decent b450 board or even second hand deals on x370 boards.

Hm seems alot of people havnt seen the reviews about the fact that intel cpu´s drops frames for the VIEWERS of a stream like rain on a rainy day ...

For streaming i would only suggest a ryzen cpu since they are by far superior when it comes to streaming (not dropping frames for viewers)

If you have the cash just go r7 2700/2700x

I would only suggest an Intel cpu if your NOT streaming and instead recording and then editing and uploading or if you dont stream at all clearly the Intel 8700k is king...
