Is This A Bad Idea And Could It Work ?!

X_ANTH0NY_X

So, I have a fairly new laptop from Dell. It's the Dell Inspiron 15 5570 (i5 8th Gen). I didn't really notice this while buying it but now while using it I've noticed how pointless a CD Drive is in 2018. So my idea was to 1) Remove the CD Drive which I've done before and replace it with a USB hub of the CD Drive's size and wire it to the motherboard or 2) Try to 3D Print a part like the CD Drive except it has USB and Thunderbolt cut outs and then wire it to the motherboard. Could either idea work or could neither work? Any feedback would be great!

There are caddys on Amazon that will let you replace your ODD with a second HDD/SSD. Those are highly useful.

A geek squad member told me you could also run a graphics card through it potentially. Is that valid?

For around $10 get the hard drive adapter that slides in where the DVD drive is. Use this for your project, mounting plate.

Its a sata port, not pcie. You cant get usb from it. You could try ditching your internal wifi card, (use a external netgear usb wifi dongle thingy)plug a pcie to usb adapter into that so you could run the cables over to the hard drive caddy you are using for a project frame,

You wouldnt need to 3d print anything. Just dremel holes in the factory dvd drive plastic cover ...you are going to attach to the harddrive adapter...for the usb to come thru and epoxy in place inside.

Beware...Dell may have the bios locked down and the pcie where the wifi is plugged in.....might not work with a pcie card. One way to find out..

Brrrp....The 1st thing you need to do with that Dell is go into the BIOs and disable your network connecting cards from being the first 2 boot devices. Do you think Dell should be able to boot your laptop thru a remote connection device Morty?..even with your computer turned off? Its like I’m talkin to a wall here.

Next rip out the wifi card and flush it down a toilet. Who does Dell think it is anyways having complete control of YOUR device. Use a USB wireless dongle Morty.

Pop your screen cover off and unplug the camera/mic board Morty...these guys are complete Pervs.

This bought you a tiny bit of security from those damn Indians Morty. They had that wifi cards antenna set up to use microwaves to 3d image your surroundings...even cook you alive.

Brrrrp....what tha hell you doin buying a Dell for anyways Morty? Be a whole hell alot safer running Red Star OS
