Calyos NSG S0 2-Phase Cooling Solutions is Dead?

After several hickups and delays it seems like Kickstarter Calyos NSG S0 project stopped breathing.

There are no updates for 2 months, no responses to emails and last September deadline is impossible to meet.

Even people who worked on NSG left for Monster Labo  https://www.monsterlabo.com/

There are no official statements but it is quite obvious at this point.

I wonder how Calyos as a company will deal with this situation.

4 months since the last update (June 14th 2018) ...

Calyos deleted their Twitter account.

Now the account name was registered by somebody else; the description of the twitter page is "We stole money from backers to fund our poorly run business!".

https://twitter.com/CalyosTM

Around the beginning of October 2018, Calyos changed their website and removed from their official website all traces of the NSG-S0.

Announcement, on Linkedin : https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6450373948797390848

Now : https://www.calyos-tm.com/

Before : https://web.archive.org/web/20180823105841/https://www.calyos-tm.com/

On September 28th 2018, they posted on Facebook "Dear Community, we are hearing your request for communication and are preparing something to release shortly."

Two weeks later, nothing ... At least the Facebook page is still up.

https://www.facebook.com/calyostm/posts/1389391827861180

At the beginning of 2018, two Engineer and a Communication Manager, left Calyos and started their own company "MonsterLabo".

https://www.linkedin.com/in/quentin-bouve-20422543/

https://www.linkedin.com/in/elisa-wolf-a9358167/

Calyos has a deficit problem and did a capital reduction. Calyos went from 11 578 297 € capital to 3 462 048 €

https://www.companyweb.be/gratisbtwopzoeken_recherchertvagratuit_detail.asp?source=&vat=837940141&SwitchLang=1

Nobody answers the company phone number.

This project is dead ☹️

This needs definitly some more public attention! There is also a reddit thread:

Maybe the community should work together to get at least an answer from calyos? Even a bad (hopefully not!) answer would bring some light into this...

The hate seems real, if you take a look into their facebook reviews: https://www.facebook.com/pg/calyostm/

Maybe we are too few people, maybe this case seems to be boring for most of the LTT viewers, but I think a little techquicke would be perfect to examine the rights of the customers of a failed kickstarter project. This project could be an example in this quicke. This ensures that the public is aware of this case and also sensitizes other people to put their money in Kickstarter projects.

Update: http://fanlessfan.com/ - Error 404.

I started a complaint about calyos, maybe the EU will help us. You can add your complaint here:
https://ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr/main/?event=main.complaints.screeningphase

I added the paypal ref id code, the order number from paypal and all other information I got from paypal. Please also add your complaint there. The more people are complaining the higher the chance that we will be heared.

As far as I understood, backers take the risk, and if it does not work out, backers might lose all the money. That is up to the project if they want to make refunds or not, that is if they have any money left or not.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kickstarter:

Quote

There is no guarantee that people who post projects on Kickstarter will deliver on their projects, use the money to implement their projects, or that the completed projects will meet backers' expectations. Kickstarter advises backers to use their own judgment on supporting a project. They also warn project leaders that they could be liable for legal damages from backers for failure to deliver on promises.[33] Projects might also fail even after a successful fundraising campaign when creators underestimate the total costs required or technical difficulties to be overcome.[34][35]

From what I understood, the problems with the Chinese suppliers, reordering and paying for the shipping, re-designing and so on ate all the money and there is nothing left. So, there is nothing we can do. It is kaput. And from what I understood, there is no legal way for us to enforce them to do the refunds. We can complain and sign petitions but it will not do much. I do not see how legally, Calyos owes us anything. The thing that is irritating that none of the Calyos people could come out and say, "The project did not work out and it is gone." Life goes on. Probably if they had money left and did not pay out the refunds, it would be a different story. I think that they were way overoptimistic about their abilities and how much money they need to make it happen.

Kickstarter is almost like gambling. If you are not ready to lose the money, do not back the project. The option is to wait until a projects starts shipping the stuff and then buy it. This will cost more, but there are far more chances of getting a product then.

Maybe if they had named it NSG S1 and not NSG S0, it would have worked out ;).

Yeah that's true, backers always take the risk, but as I see maybe around half the buyers are regular buyers who bought the case via the fanlessfan.com shop. I am also one of them. So we still have regular rights. We spent money, so we should get the good or a refund - that's it. Maybe the project itself is dead, but Calyos seems alive.

We are at least disappointed as you are. :( You had least the chance to put your hands on this - we just got some shiny pictures and hole in our pockets...

@LinusTech Crowdfunding could be an idea for an LTT or Techquickie video.

@tridyyes I watched video, and based on that I ordered NSG S0. but have you see dinosaur in a movie? They use green boxes that are later replaced by CGI. Thats why I asked if they actually get their hands on the case, or just created add with green box and some video editing.

@Kubik I am pretty sure they had the first prototype sent to them in the HOLY $H!T video.

First, and most important, why would LTT compromise their reputation as a tech review company? We are here because we trust them with things like that.

Second, I am guessing, but to do CGI in that video on that level, Calyos would probably have to pay LTT all of the Kickstarter money they have raised, which would defeat the purpose of the campaign.

Third, there were other people at Computex 2017 who saw the case as well.

I am not sure why you are concerned about the prototype being real. There is a huge step from having own prototype and mass producing it for sale somewhere in another country. Calyos has sent this prototype case to LTT for review, and then it was sent back (or further to another reviewer somewhere). It was only a single piece produced at that time. It was another prototype at Computex but still a prototype, an in-house made one.

Calyos had good intentions for this product to happen, but this step from a prototype to mass production was much bigger than they expected.

"why would LTT compromise their reputation" why others did? Most probably for money.

"there were other people at Computex" but unfortunately no one from backers/http://fanlessfan.com/ buyers :(

"Calyos had good intentions for this product to happen" I doubt that.

"but this step from a prototype to mass production was much bigger than they expected" they did not say anything about problems in a year.

they promised date and then silence do not respond to emails, do not pick up a calls, just silence.

I believe most of backers would understand that there could be problems, but they not say so, they promised it will happen and then nothing.

I originally want 8000€ option, but they was not able to confirm what HW will be in it.

Even though review by LTT might have brought more hype to the project, I do not think it is fair to put any responsibility on them or even try to involve them in the process of helping Calyos faking the project and stealing the money or similar. The only thing they did was to review a prototype. The line is drawn there.

To make it clear, I do not defend Calyos. The way they treated backers and buyers, and generally, the whole project is unacceptable. I am afraid though that it will be hard to get any funds back. What I am really curious about, is to see where monsterlabo got their initial funds from, knowing that there are some ex-NSG people working there.

I just ask if they really have "working" prototype or not.

Monsterlabo unfortunately do not offer anything TR4 compatible, not even for 8000€, they take few days to consider it, but the answer was not any time soon :(

Surprisingly, they are back with a new update:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1489140137/nsg-s0-worlds-first-fanless-chassis-for-high-perfo/posts/2364147?ref=backer_project_update

summary:

they learned so much (bad experience is also experience) + new team + new (better) design + new deadline (end of June 2019)

my question

where is the money coming from?

it amazes me how they managed to write the whole update without a single "sorry" word.
