YouTube has added support for AV1!

What is AV1 you might ask?

Spoiler

It's a new video codec being developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia for short). AOMedia is a massive alliance consisting of ~40 companies all banding together to create the best possible video codec.

  • The goals are to beat HEVC in terms of compression (that is to say, the video files will be smaller, or look better at the same file size) by about 30%.
  • AV1 should be free to use both in terms of monetary cost (it won't cost anything to use it, unlike AVC/H.264 and HEVC/H.265) and licensing wise (you can use it however you want).
  • High performance in hardware - Since all the major chip makers have been involved in the making of the codec, it has been designed with future hardware in mind. As a result, it will be very fast and use very little power once hardware with support for it starts to appear.
  • Flexibility - It is designed to work well for low resolution, low quality clips all the way up to very high resolution and quality videos.
  • Support for all the latest and greatest technologies such as 12 bit color depth, wide color gamut, high frame rate, and so on.

Like I said earlier, about 40 companies are in the alliance and have pledged to implement support for it in their products. Some of the most noteworthy companies in the alliance are:

  • Google
  • Apple
  • Microsoft
  • Mozilla
  • Cisco
  • IBM
  • Nvidia
  • AMD
  • ARM
  • Intel
  • Realtek
  • Amazon
  • Facebook
  • Netflix
  • Adobe
  • BBC
  • Hulu
  • VLC
  • Vimeo

Anyway, Youtube now has support for it (if you turn it on over at TestTube).

You will need a browser which supports it too however. Currently the only two are Chrome 70 (the beta version) and Firefox 63 (the Firefox beta version, but you need to enable it in about:config).

Here is a playlist of videos which currently has an AV1 version available. Please note that AV1 is currently only used for the 480p versions of the videos because of performance issues. The AV1 files for other, higher resolutions exists, but they won't be served automatically.

I checked the Halo Infinite trailer and was kind of disappointed by the file sizes. The AV1 files are slightly larger than the VP9 files. However, Google says that they did this on purpose because the larger files are easier to decode, and right now they want to evaluate decoder performance.

Here are all the files for the Halo trailer:

I uploaded the 720p AV1 version of the Halo trailer if anyone wants to for example try playing it in VLC and see how it looks. Here is the download link.

Description from the AV1 Beta launch playlist:

Quote

The first videos to receive YouTube's AV1 transcodes.

Support for AV1 in MP4 within Media Source is available in Chrome 70, and Firefox Nightly builds newer than September 13 with the media.av1.enabled and media.mediasource.experimental.enabled prefs set.

Using a supported browser and choosing the 'Prefer AV1 for SD' setting on youtube.com/testtube, you should see AV1 used for these videos when playing less than 480p, switching to VP9 for higher resolutions.

At time of writing, these transcodes are encoded at a very high bitrate for decoder performance testing.

The videos selected here represent a large slice of content that YouTube users enjoy, from talking-head programs to popular music videos. We've chosen action videos featuring snow and water spray, as these tend to stress encoders and decoders alike. Animated footage and game captures (coming soon) provide a wider range of content, and we round out the set with some beautiful stuff straight from the makers of cinema cameras.

Just a few videos today, but our commitment to AV1 is strong, and we have ambitious goals for rolling out the new format. Look for AV1 transcodes on the videos from your favorite creators soon.

I am super excited to see progress on AV1 continue.

Interesting, maybe we'll see streaming done using AV1 encoding in the future if it really does replace HEVC and H.264

So could this codec replace most/all other video codecs one day? I wont need VLC player to play 9000 different formats? This is way overdue

Just now, AntiTrust said:

That's the idea, yes.

Chances are people won't go back and reencode all their old videos, so those old codecs will still be out there. But for new content hopefully we won't need more than AV1 for things like video on demand, streaming and so on.

There are also plans to develop a JPEG/GIF/PNG replacement based on AV1. They have experimented with it and it's already far superior to JPEG in terms of file size and quality.

nvm it's about 1/3rd the size

How's quality vs file size compare to H.265? A side by side video would be cool

All I wish is for AV1 to have proper hardware acceleration support across a decent amount of hardware unlike VP9 did.

Also, I've been looking for fucking ages on what the audio bitrate is for the various format codes.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Local asshole and 6th generation console enthusiast.

I wonder if this means the YouTube app on the Apple TV will no longer be crap.

The Apple TV probably follows the iOS layout of using the AVC video and MP4 audio.

What do you mean? Pretty much every mobile device, every Intel iGPU since Kaby Lake, the Raven's Ridge APUs, and Pascal from Nvidia all support VP9 decode. Considering how recent it is that's actually fairly decent.

Heck there's even some systems that have encode acceleration for VP9 which is just shocking considering one of the biggest complaints about it was encode complexity.

Heck there's even some systems that have encode acceleration for VP9 which is just shocking considering one of the biggest complaints about it was encode complexity.

Maybe I'm just looking too forward or backward, but that's the thing: you need the literal latest when it's been around in the mainstream for a few years now, although as I said, I could be thinking too far back.

Interesting, maybe we'll see streaming done using AV1 encoding in the future if it really does replace HEVC and H.264

Hopefully... but it seems like it is quite a bit more demanding to encode than x265 as of right now.

That'll probably be improved down the road.

I like the idea of less space taken up without sacrificing quality though, as someone who's considering going into content creation, that is pretty tempting.

Everything I encode I make to x265 or VP9... unless for some specific use where nothing else beside x264 is not supported.

But for live streaming I am very limited by my upload speed and I have to stay under 1250bitrate. x265/VP9/AV1 would significantly boost the image quality on those bitrates for the stream.

That's another consideration. Smaller streamers who can't afford the best internet to have high bitrates could also make use of this to have better quality streams instead of being limited to 480p or 720p.

But if you go over 480 or 720p you drastically limit your audience unless the server you're streaming to does live transcoding.

522p 30FPS master race :D

Encoding to x265 saved me so much disk space, its unbelievable. But since I dont have a very beefy CPU for HEVC encode, I did only the important stuff and rest I encode with the Pascal NVENC x265 which is only doable in StaxRIP (AFAIK). Not as good as CPU x265 but its significantly faster to encode and I still got better quality than with a CPU x264 on a comparable bitrates (3000-4000 for 1080p video).

Its not the resolution, its the bitrate.

You can stream at 4k if you want but if its anything than static images it will look a lot worse on the same bitrate that would be typicaly used for 720p streaming because the picture fidelity would get significantly worse as the compression would have to be a lot greater.

My Core2Duo didn't, and VP9 was a considerable consideration for my upgrade.  Would have much preferred to have the ability to offload to the dGPU, but nope.

Went from a Q9000 with 4 cores at 2.00 gigahertz solid to a 7700HQ with 4 cores at 2.8(when intels 'feels like it') jigahurts.  Wouldn't feels as con'ed if it were an upgrade that needed to happen b/c of CPU bicep flex rather than hipster CPU 'finesse' energy-saving landfill-filling blathering blatherskite weren't the principal reason.

For some reason when I read the title I assumed it was being sarcastic xD well, I guess this is good.  It leaves me wondering where some other codecs fit into the "family" though, namely AVC, VP9, and Opus.  Are those just older versions in the same "line", or are they totally different?  Which if any of those were/are proprietary or charge some sort of fee to use?  I know Youtube has used (or can still if you set it to) AVC, and currently the "main" one is VP9... I wonder why Opus never caught on.  They were already using it for audio I believe, why not video too?  From what little I know, it too was supposed to be very high quality (better visuals per byte), and also totally free and open.

nvm I was confused

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Opus is an audio codec; AVC video and AAC audio is the default for every video until YouTube either converts it at a certain point in being viewed, if the video is at 1440p or higher, or you use the site's editing tools; then, VP9 and Opus kick in.

Opus can also do video, I watched a rather lengthy explanation of how it works and how it's unique among codecs for not following the typical "key frame followed by frames that show what changed" paradigm (but that's besides the point).  As for the default, every video I've ever bothered to check has been using VP9

Hmm, strange that Opus can do video, although to be fair, the way Opus was made to begin with is pretty damn strange.

You probably watch a ton of videos that are in VP9; usually, older videos or videos with relatively low amounts of views and are new tend to be in the AVC/AAC setup.
