Hi All,

 

Just a newbie looking for some info. Majority of you are in some technical line or are surrounded by technology. How do you dispose / recycle any form of hardware component be it from old switches to cellphones that aren't worth the selling effort?

 

I am interested in any organisations / departments / countries efforts and how things are done all over the world (live in South Africa) even if you just chuck it in the bin :)

I throw it away in the garbage unless I can recycle it or it has deadly toxins in it and you have to specially dispose of it

Just keeping this here as a I don't throw out anything containing data that I have not securely scrubbed. It is cheaper and easier for me to hold onto it for life than risking anything.

 

Where I live we have recycling depots that are (usually) free to toss home electronics. So I don't actually have much of a issue with that.

Our garbage company has special electronic pickups.  You fill out the forms and leave the materials on the front porch then they come and dispose of it.

I've got some local places that accept e-waste.

I also have bought a few things from them because large corps and schools get rid of stuff before its dead, so cheap servers and PCs for me.

Contact your town or poison control about electronics recycle. A lot of towns should have an electronics recycle center where you can drop off computers TVs and whatnot. Some stores used to have “drop off your old cell phone for recycle” boxes.

I usually just chuck it in the bin. If its anything you cant put in the bin, like a car battery, I just leave it in a rental.

Ontario also has a program in which most electronics retailers are also drop off locations (Such as Staples, Best Buy, Canadian Tire, etc).

 

Definitely don't throw it in the garbage.

the local dumps/tips have electronic waste departments where you can drop off some old unwanted or broken hardware.
