Another one bites the dust. OnePlus to remove headphone jack from 6T

I can't say I care, though. OnePlus was dead to me the moment they showed off their "5.5" screen in a 5" phone's body"...and it turned out to be the same size as every other 5.5" phone, it just had a great price. They've been liars since the company started.

One thing I find hilarious was that ever since the 3T (launched after the iPhone 7), they've been mocking Apple's decision to go jackless.

And in late 2018? They're doing a 180 because the shell they're using didn't have one.

You mean the ones that LG G5 introduced? Wide or not, that was the first idea of 2 cameras.

Sure, but when did it go mainstream? That's the point. LG actually does a great implementation of it but everyone started doing it right after Apple.

I personally wasn't impressed it by it on my gfs 6S, but that's just me. Some android phones have great vibrating motors, don't be fooled. Big name flagships usually.

That's a pretty unpopular opinion, but whatever.

The hell? Sharp was the one who started it. They released it in 2014.

That wasn't even a real phone. Heck sharp was just showing off their technology prowess with it. Apple and Samsung mainstreamed it into literally every phone these days

Any company that thinks it's their job to strong arm the industry forward rather than giving consumers the choice is not doing us any favors, they are a dictatorial company forcing what suits them best.

They're not dictating anyone. If it's an unpopular opinion, pretty much everyone has the power to refuse and go against them. In the past, whenever they did it, it moved the industry forward and killed legacy stuff. As soon as a proper short range fast wireless communication becomes a thing (like Intel Wi Gig) I have no doubt Apple will be the first one to get rid of all the ports to push everyone into a fully wireless future.

Apple wasn't the first to have a fingerprint reader. There were phones with fingerprint readers years before that.

Yeah, it was shit. Touch ID was the first mainstream proper fingerprint sensor that didn't look ugly and didn't require a swipe gesture. You have to give credit where credit is due. Even I can come up with an idea and make an extremely shitty implementation of something right now, but it's the people who make it seamless and almost perfect the ones who deserves the credit.

10 hours ago, dizmo said:

Already answered. They made it mainstream and portrait mode became a thing.

10 hours ago, dizmo said:

64 bit operating systems weren't a Samsung issue, that's handled by Google. So. Kind of an irrelevant point.

No one expected Apple to do that. Samsung literally said 20 min after the keynote that they will make a 64 bit phone in the near future.

Bezel reduction has been something all companies have been striving for. It's not something the did just because Apple said they were going to do it.

Ah, but you've bought into the great myth: that the mere existence of a feature in a basic form means Apple didn't do anything innovative.

Yes, there were phones with fingerprint readers before the iPhone 5s... and they sucked at it.  You had to swipe your finger, and often multiple times since the systems were very finicky.  Apple made fingerprint readers popular because it had the first good implementation: just a touch, and you didn't have to be precise.

Dual cameras?  Yeah, there were certainly phones before, but Apple's the one that popularized both zoom and portrait mode.  You can't really compare something like the Evo 3D, because that second camera was used to produce the stereoscopic effect for 3D photos and videos.

I wouldn't call 64-bit operating systems irrelevant.  Apple's ability to control both the hardware and software meant that it could go 64-bit considerably earlier.  It even started requiring 64-bit support in apps in June 2015... 2015!  Android won't require 64-bit support until August 2019.

Now, on the bezel front, I can agree.  Apple did popularize the notch (sorry, Essential, but selling a few dozen thousand phones before the iPhone X doesn't make you a trendsetter), but minimizing bezels wasn't a new concept.

Probably will be a PR disaster for them, and sales may take a hit. It's true that there are not longer many alternatives, and objectively they're still doing well, but the fact that they were bragging about it all the time and suddenly reversed their decision will make people angry enough to instinctively avoid them. If they really had to do it, a soft landing and an apology would be necessary given their niche positioning.

Samsung copied Apple, sure. LG was actually the 3rd phone, as pointed out by a fellow member here.

You say again that Samsung decided to copy Apple on bezels after a rumor in 2015. You keep telling yourself that. Want a phone that came out before and that was unmatched on that front for a long time? LG G2. I'd argue you that one and G3 showed everyone, Apple, Samsung and others, what was possible. 2013 and 2014, respectively. And there were even more phones that beat both of them in that race, from Chinese even.

We are arguing that Samsung copies Apple, while Apple wasn't even the first one to introduce a bunch of things you mentioned. So I will say Samaung copied the same ones that Apple did. Apple did release few things first, no arguing, and quite a good job on many, many things, but saying Samsung copied Apple for dual camera, small bezels and whatnot, while Apple copied it from others, is hypocritical. They both copied others. Same how I can say Apple copied Samsung on bunch of other things, like NFC, IP rating, wireless charging, AMOLED, and that might be true, but also hypocritical since I'm sure that except AMOLED, Samsung the first one to introduce those things.

I am glad that Samsung didn't "copy" Apple on notch and headphone jack though.

Sure, I'll just use my power to buy an iphone with the 3.5 port in it so they know I still want it.  9_9

In the past every new technology that has replaced an old technology has coexisted long enough for consumer to make the switch without compromise.    As I said before USB existed for a decade alongside parallel so consumers had several update cycles to move to the new tech without compromise or having to buy new hardware,  ODD co-existed along side floppy drives for a decade for the same reason.   Imagine if all the manufacturers suddenly removed every port except USB C.  You know why it wouldn't happen and the 3.5 is no different.

Stop fooling yourself, tech does not need to be "forced" at all, that is just a stupid way to say you think apple is better without giving anyone the opportunity to adapt without having to buy new peripherals let alone being able to show they don't like it.

You could until the release of the XS and XR. Apple sold the iP6S and iPSE prior, both had 3.5mm jacks.

So the only way the consumer is going to be able to show apple they still want the 3.5 is to stick with a 4 year old phone and not upgrade or quit the apple ecosystem entirely?  Give up on the $$$ I've spent ios apps or live without a 3.5?   We all know it is not the consumers choice here.

Given that the 4 year old phone still has the horsepower do do everything asked and then some, is still getting updates, and won't cease to work just from being old, it's a rather good option.

Yer righto. How about you edit out all the context behind that statement so you can make it look plainly wrong let alone the fact that Apple removed the 3.5, I objectively do not have the choice to buy it.

Up until it can't run anything because like all hardware eventually it won't be supported.

Wouldn't be an issue if they all allowed USB-C to headphone jack adapters, and I mean any adapter, not just their own.

I really hate this trend. I don't want wireless headphones, I want to use my Audio Technica M50X's so I don't have to hear all my coworkers making a shit load of noise. And the wireless adapter for those is horrible based on reviews, low battery life, poor quality, etc.

Thanks uninformed users for making something completely stupid, very popular and profitable. Thus ensuring that companies will move towards that in an effort to make money.

(Edit: I was tempted to blame just Apple users, but probability is that there are at least 5 Apple users who know that this is stupid and haven't upgraded to the latest version of the phones)

I also want quality. Wireless will never have the same quality as a wired cable. Also I'd rather not worry about battery life.

I have a nice pair of headphones, I'd like to continue using them. I wouldn't care if they would actually use USB-C standards and be compatible with any kind of USB-C to 3.5mm Jack adapter. But HTC is retarded about that.

Quality is fine (I doubt you’d notice the difference in a blind test), and battery life is nowadays well over 20 hours. I don’t think the removal of the headphone jack is a good thing, but it’s hardly calamitous.

It's just a load of BS. Every reason given for the removal (except for Sony's reasoning), doesn't hold up: Samsung has been capable of pushing bigger batteries and expanding tech into their phones without removing the jack or making their phones massive (relative to past iterations in the context of the Note line, relative to the competition for the S line).

^Basically this. It's retarded marketing at it's best/worst (because marketing moves are usually retarded in my opinion and I seriously doubt how much effect marketing has on whether or not a product actually sells.)

I've no doubt that many people have spent billions of dollars convincing executives and shareholders that marketing is a huge deal, but considering marketing is the job of spinning bullshit, I have a hard time believing that.

Or maybe it does because the general population seems to be retarded. I'll just end with

"the original Sriracha company spends almost nothing on marketing or even patents/copyrights, and the developer for Stardew Valley spent next to nothing on marketing. Both of which are massive success stories."
