Well, we know Steam already has a system in place, to allow downloads of products that were purchased prior to being pulled from the store.  As UPlay is solely for Ubisoft (last I checked), I can't see them losing the rights to their own products.  Same with Origin/EA.  GoG - if I recall correctly - has the same policy in place as Valve, allowing downloads of product which have been purchased then pulled.

 

I can't speak to any others (such as GMG), since I haven't used any other digital distribution services.  Well, I used D2D once back in the day, but that was such a horrible service.

Don't forget Blizzard running BattleNet (2.0) with all their 2004-onwards games along with (so far) 2 Activision games (Destiny 2 & CoD:BO4), as not having to worry about licensing games for the platform (unless Activision-Blizzard as a parent splits the two main components back off and dissolves, highly unlikely).

 

And yes, I call the BattleNet Launcher system "BattleNet 2.0" to differentiate it from BattleNet 1.0 Blizzard was using from Warcraft 2: B.Net Edition through WarCraft 3: Frozen Throne.

That’s stupid to blame Apple. This just happened in GTA IV and all the music. Same reason why movies pop up and disappear on Netflix

Sure.  Uncompressed video can take up way more still.  The ratio hasn't changed.

 

I thought this was common knowledge but maybe some numbers are in order here:

  • uncompressed 1080p 24 fps stream: 1920 * 1080 * 24 * 3 = 149299200 bytes / s (~142 MB/s)
  • uncompressed 8 channel (7.1) 24 bit 192 kHz audio (way higher quality than any movie I'm aware of): 192000 * 24/8 * 8 = 4608000 bytes / s (~4.39 MB/s)
  • Compressed 1080p video stream: anywhere from 15 to 50 Mbit/s generally
  • Compressed audio stream: usually 96 kbit/s per channel, maybe as high as 160, so maybe 1.25 Mbit/s for 8 of them.

Didn't Titanfall also use 5.1 channel mixes for the audio, though? PCM 16-bit 44.1kHz stereo audio doesn't take up that much space, but 5.1 channel audio of that kind most definitely will.

That's not the same.  Well, at least Netflix isn't the same.  With Netflix, Spotify, etc. you're paying a subscription fee to access a library of whatever they have access/permission to license at that moment.  New things and old things come and go freely.  My understanding is the person in this case, to their understanding, had purchased a movie (or few).  That's different than paying to access something, that's paying to get something that's now yours forever, same as if you'd bought a blueray, etc.

 

The GTA case is kinda the same though xD and it's bad and should not happen.
