Battery drain and CPU issues [MI A2]

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

After I watched Linus video about his battery problems I wanted to share my experience with the Xiaomi Mi A2.

Long story short:

  • Screen-Brightness: 1%
  • Bluetooth: Off
  • GPS: Off
  • WLAN: On
  • Mobile data: On
  • Running App in the background: Spotify

After I charged it to 100% I started my little test.

I reached the 25% battery mark at around 16h and 53m. Weird thing is that Spotify only used 14% and my phone in Idle used only 7% to 15% (depends which number is the right one).

Some people are reporting over 1 day battery usage with over 6h on screen time (see XDA link below).

For me it doesn't make sense. Why do I have only 25% left but nothing uses the battery that intense. So I searched a little bit around and found out that some users had a similar problem.

One of these users uploaded a screenshot from CPU-Z and all cores are running at maximum frequency. I downloaded CPU-Z and checked it and I have the same issue which can explain the battery drain.

The only "workaround" is to restart the phone but in my case it happens again after 1-2 hours.

I currently make a new test with pure on screen time and the youtube app running.

UPDATE:

I'm finished with the new test.

  • Screen-Brightness: 1%
  • Bluetooth: Off
  • GPS: Off
  • WLAN: On
  • Mobile data: On
  • Running App in the foreground: Youtube

So as you can see I would get around 5-7 hours of Screen-On-Time and you can also see that the youtube app used a bunch of the battery.

Pretty strange and weird is that my CPU was always on 100% load. The 4 gaps only appeared on the exact moment when my screen turned off. And I also checked the CPU state with the AIDA64 Tool to verify that it isn't a software bug from CPU-Z. All Cores are running on 100% without any reason.

I managed to fix the CPU issue with the following steps

  • Unlock Bootloader (needs to wipe the existing data)
  • Setup as new device
  • Wipe it again
  • Lock Bootloader

As you can see my CPU isn't stuck at max frequency anymore and I have a perfect battery life.

EDIT:

After a while the CPU gets stuck again (with September 5 security patch and September 21)

It's due to the fingerprint sensor bug. If you don't use the fingerprint unlock you won't have this issue. Waiting Xiaomi to fix it.

Yes I didn't updated the thread here in a long while. I discuss this topic on the XDA and Xiaomi Forum.

The Dev-Team don't mark it as a bug and don't trust apps like CPU-Z/AIDA64.

And even more bugs are discovered daily and no official answer from xiaomi at all.

Hello there ,

I don't have any problem with my mi a2. Just checked cpuz and everything seems fine , cpus are not stuck whatsoever. Although I don't have heavily used it yet my battery seems normal . I will repost in a few days (I use fingerprint scanner )

I just bought this marvelous phone after  redmi note 4 mtk. I really like this phone. I don't have any battery issues now but with cpu-z it shows that I have sd 660 and same time it shows that it is sd 636. How and why it does that. I know that I have legit mi a2. With other app it shows what it should show. I link screenshot/s

Sd 660 is an overclocked version of 636 so do not worry.

I was a quite busy but now I have time to update the Thread.

The main problem is the Goodix Fingerprint-Sensor.
  1. When the Fingerprint sensor is disabled you have most of the time no problems but if you directly unlock your phone from deep sleep with the Fingerprint sensor all cores are going to get stuck at the maximum frequency. Sometimes it will take multiple uses to get the bug triggered.
  2. Another trigger is if you already unlocked your phone and you swipe multiple times over the fingerprint sensor you can get the bug too. But this is more rare and not as common as the unlocking.
The only "workaround" is to restart the phone and to disable the fingerprint sensor.
Users in the XDA Forums are reporting if they flash another ROM or change the min frequency of the CPU the bug will no longer occur.

More users with Xiaomi devices and the Goodix FP Sensor getting the bug (Redmi Note 5, Mi 6x).
The Xiaomi Dev-Team talked with an Beta-Tester and they told him that they don't trust apps like CPU-Z/AIDA64.

Recently the phone got the new October update and the bug is still not fixed. The threads on the Xiaomi Forum are now marked as "Under Discussion" and still no official statement from Xiaomi!

The phone has many bugs such as low storage speed, proximity sensor failure, connectivity issues via SIM cards etc.

In the current state you shouldn't buy the phone. If you already have one you should return it. The support is awful and you don't get any updates from Xiaomi or the Dev-Team!

Here are some links to XDA and Xiaomi Threads and official news from Third-Party sites:

If you search for 'Xiaomi Mi A2 bug' you will find more news pages about this problem.

I support this statement. As much as I love stock Android on phones, this is awful for a company that has a large following all over the world. Hopefully, they can fix this as soon as possible. Might stick with my trusty zenfone 2 laser for now.

Hey! I made this! *currently fixing my profile after reviving it*
