Why Can't They Fix This?

Agreed.

Did a review of the Samsung S9+ and I'd have to give it points for overall aesthetics, but when it comes to software and speed the OnePlus6 knocks it way out.

This might have been said before... But have you tired to disable Bixby... Not just in the app itself but also by deleting the appdata? So bixby functions as it's not setup... The bixby app uses about 30-40% each day when it's setup (Even though ex bixby voice is disabled) on my S8+ and S9+.

I made an account to let you guys know this. My s9 plus has been having this problem and I couldn't figure it out. But I think I just did. My phone has never been in any galaxy gear vr devices but gear vr services is using FOURTY FUCKING TWO percent if my battery. This is a screen shot of its usage

What I am currently doing is going through

Dev options - running services

Finding apps I don't use that are currently running after a fresh reboot

Then disabling them in settings. Hopefully this helps someone Ill report back if this fixes it. I'm going to try it for a few days

Edit:

So I used my phone for roughly an hour and half an hour of screen on time ( light stuff tho like sync for reddit.) started at 100% and I'm at 97%. Before I generally dropped 10% am hour regardless of use. I believe I have solved this at least in my caseThis is my usage after disabling gear vr and all Samsung services I wasn't using ( like bixby, Samsung app store.)   the other services were not using as much battery life as gear vr services but I figures it couldn't hurt

Had to make an account finally for LTT just for this.

This guy seems to have had the same problem as me.

S7 edge user. Battery used to be fine for about a year,  easily 1 day usage. Until one day(no software updates around that time) it started ULTRA draining battery. Like to the amount linus had problems with. Easily less than 50% of previous performance. Only when in online connectivity though, airplane mode was fine. But man if you take that off you can see it dropping in plane sight.

I digged deep for this, its an unrooted phone so i went with gsam battery monitor and Systempanel2. Problem was that both were showing largest amount of battery usage% as ''Unallocated'' was getting desperate until randomly found someones comment:

You needed to delete Cache and Data from Google play services AND the dalvik cache from recovery menu. It was even REQUIRED to be done 1 before the other( sadly I dont remember which way anymore, but im guessing play services 1st, then dalvik) You can just try :D

Worked miracles. Battery life recovered to pretty much normal levels. Phones done the same thing a few times now, but this full wipe/delete play services seems to always fix it. Yes slightly inconvenient as you need to give some permissions again etc. BUT you get to keep your data and doesnt majorly impact regular phone usage.

Hope dis helps,

Peace out

I too made an account just to look at this these and contribute my experience with Samsung.

Back on the Galaxy S1(Galaxy Fascinate on Verizon here in the states) I had this issue with Google sync with my school account. Specifically the Google services my school didn't offer, even more specific, picture backup (Picasa? At the time).

I'm not sure why specifically my Samsung phone did that when it's a Google service, but it did, and other devices didn't. (HTC incredible might have too ...) I'm guessing some way Samsung has "accounts" modified caused that to "wake-lock" the phone.

Try taking pictures in the new phone and see if it dies trying to sync pictures to perhaps the LMG Google account(s). Or just start disabling account sync options until you find which service it might be.

Antidotal Information:

-Not an Android developer, but software engineer nonetheless, so I'm not completely in the dark

-I've only used S1,S4,S7, and now Note 8 as daily drivers

-I've also had the occasional bad day with battery life on each device for similar reasons everyone else had mention in the topic (screen facing pocket, rogue app, cache needed some cleaning... Samsung's skin has been less of a problem lately.)

-My Note 8 and it's "small" battery can last me ~4-5 hours playing Pokemon Go.

-Snapchat wrecks the battery if not closed before locking the screen.

-Facebook does a poor job at implementing contacts sync, and can corrupt the contacts database causing phones' contacts and messaging apps to go into force close loop.

I hope any of this helps!

-The Mark V.

I don't have Samsung stuff so I can't test it but I'd be interested in seeing what happens after

adb shell top -m 10 > log.txt

Is there any process which is regularly eating a lot of CPU on the process list?

made the process list slightly shorter for easier log browsing times

From what i see. u need root. My guess are kernel wakelocks. They dont let the phone sleep in idle mode, which explains ur phone being hot while being in ur pocket. Root it and use Gsam battery apps to narrow down which wakelocks are most active and try to find a way to block them. Most of the time u will need  a  custom kernel to block wakelocks.

Cheers!!

I know that Motorola has a HUGE battery problem with the Moto Z. Tons and tons of reports of batteries heavily degradation towards the 1 year mark, me included. Happened on my old Moto G4 too, twice! But that is degradation, not what might just be CPU cycles with Linus.

Hii, I'v had the same problem with my Sony Xperia Z2. In idle it was hot and the battery didnt last long, phone factory reset didnt fix the problem for me, but then my friend told me to do a factory reset with PC software and that actualy did it. Now my phone works just fine. Maybe your should try this if there is something like Sony companion but for samsung phones. Would like to hear from you if this fixed it!

I have the g s9 plus as well, and I had this problem. Here are some things I did to fix it. Change everything on your current phone to default. Like the screen res, the location, the performance mode. If not then, I have no idea why your phone is doing this. Maybe you got it too hot at one point or another

Hi @LinusTech for me the battery drain on an old Samsung was alleviated by switching from push notifications to a less frequent (every 30 minute) check on any email app I used, specifically outlook and Gmail. Had the same issue for years over a few models.

Never had the drain problem when I switched to an LG or since switching to Pixel 2, but all Samsung's I've used previously forced me to change email off push notifications. No idea if this will help, but I remembered it having see the vid on YT so registered here to say, just in case.

You should go to your app section and check the battery usage on those apps I love seen gear take up 12 percent while I never used it but it might help you out

I am having the same problem with my Samsung galaxy s7 edge for a while, I know the phone is pretty dated but my experience is just like how Linus describes it. My battery is running out so fast when I don't use it, but when I am gaming or watching videos online, the battery doesn't run out extremely fast. I am just speculating but might it be that, because the phone is hot all the time the lithium-ion battery might lose its capacity much faster than the batteries at the other brands?

Please feel free to suggest your opinions about my idea.

I'm sorry I don't have the time to read trough this atm.

Did you actually find your problem Linus?

Any other solutions that worked for other people?

I have been having the same problem on my old S4 and S5 but have it also on my ulefone armor 2. I suspect it is because I'm always connected and have push notifications on for email etc.

Yeah, I've got a Note 9 upgrade from a Note 3, and it's lasting longer than the 3! So not sure what app/physical fault it may be. But then again, I'm super aggressive in my use case on app closing/wifi/bluetooth/data/screen brightness etc. Phone should last me 2 days of use if I don't freak out at 50% and plug the charger in. ?

So IMO must be one of the Apps (even if Samsing/Android stock) that Linus (and others) use. That at least might help narrow down the source of the problem?

PS, Samsung also does the "optimise phone once a day" thing. TBH I turned that off instantly. ;)

I saw numerous of headbanging solutions for trial and error. And though to myself; could Linus miss trying the most simple of solutions? High cpu stuck on services update = reboot + reboot once every week.

And my brain answered.. Maybe if searching for much harder problems.

If any of this yield any success feel free to pm me.

Its Samsungs Battery Management. All Apps on the Smartphone are running in the background and are still opened. So yesterday I wanted to buy a train ticked, I haven't closed the app, I have opened it today, and its just on the payment screen. So smasungs One UI doesn't snooze the apps in the background, and if you have over 200 apps, like me, the battery is very bad (even my old OnePlus 3T is better)

Just Watched the Video,

I had a Similar Issue with my Galaxy S8+ for Months which got to the point where my Battery Level dropped from ~25% to 0% and Shutdown within 2-3 Minutes and my Battery was only charged for 1/2 a Day at Max with often running out of Energy overnight when I slept.

While Samsung was suggesting a faulty Battery and wanted me to pay for an Exchange, I found a Solution that helped at least me to get back to my Original Capacity of having my Phone last almost 3/4th of a Day (i need a very bright Screen because I have very Bad Eyesight and cant Read really good sometimes).

I deactivated the Fast Charging on my S8+ and let it Charge to 100%. Then I waited till it dropped to 0% and shut itself off. After that, I made sure that the Battery is completely Drained by Starting the "Download Mode" until not even that would start. When this was the Case, I let my Phone Charge again to 100% (without turning it on until it had 100%) and that "Reset" the Battery Successfully.
I don't know if that Issue is still the Case in the S9+ that Linus Uses, but maybe it helps Linus too

not sure what's "normal" to Linus may differ to others.
the video and the OP lack to provide us the Following:
what EXACT settings he uses on his Samsung Phone.
what apps he uses and its permission(s).
what is Linus habits on using the phone, more details how he uses his phone.

I usually turn off NFC, GPS (Location) and Bluetooth and only turn them on when needed.

This is what I do on my personal Samsung phone which is Samsung Galaxy A70 and previous android devices that I've owned.
1. Location (GPS) one of the main culprit is apps that use location (GPS) at the background even your phone screen is locked. I turn off GPS when not needed, as some apps does use GPS even locked like opera mini browser.
if you want to use location all the time for apps go to app permissions and only enable it to certain apps that deems to be of use. Like Camera for geo location tagging, and google maps.
disable it on apps that I don't see the benefit enabling it like Samsung note, Messages, Samsung Members I'm sure you guys get the idea.
2. Data. only enable on specific apps that i would need for data like google maps, youtube, social apps that i actually use for contact like facebook messenger, whatsapp, viber and online games.
disable apps like Bixby routine, Media Storage, MTP Host, Samsung Experience (I don't know why these turn of by default for data but I don't mind them if its over the wifi)
3. Always On Display I usually don't glance the phone, I pick it up and use finger print to unlock it sees notification or time, locks it back and into the pocket or table. I don't want other people glancing on my phone for my notifications or time.
4. Gesture Stuff (lift to wake, double tap to wake, easy mute, palm swipe to capture, smart alert)
5. NFC only turning it on when gonna use it
6. Phone Visibility only turning it on when gonna use it for wireless transfer or sync with other device.
7. Bluetooth only turning it on when gonna use it for Bluetooth headset or speakers.
8. Bixby Stuffs (i don't use it and i turn it off)

I usually have 30% left by the end of the day. 10% if I lost track of time and gamed a lot.
Hope this helps track down whats eating his battery.

on iOS  side i only do Number 2, even if i leave everything turned on data, gps, bluetooth, wifi my standby usage doesn't drain much.

Idk if you still have this problem or have moved on to another phone, but Google has a tool called Battery Historian just for this. No root required, no endless trial and error, just a bugreport that can be dumped natively from any phone. This is the way to diagnose power consumption issues for Android devs.

This is better than any app you'll ever use because every other app uses data pulled from this. It reveals way more than just what app used what, and it'll show all the hidden things like kernel wakelocks, anything that can be tracked will be in this log.

Here's Google's guide to using it: https://developer.android.com/topic/performance/power/battery-historian

Sorry to necro, but I haven't seen this suggested yet, even though it's the best way to diagnose battery issues, so I hope this helps others with this problem

And if you want to send a dump, I can check it out for you
