Stupidest mistake you've made while building a pc?

SidM

Hey, I just wanted to ask you guys as to what your stupidest mistakes while pc building are. My stupidest mistake was the time when I was filling my loop and forgot to plug off the extra openings on my GPU water block, it resulted in water spilling everywhere.xD

I've ripped out one end of an IDE ribbon cable whilst trying to unplug it from a drive header on an old motherboard during a computer mounting lesson at school. (Don't think they caught me though!)

I don't really make any mistakes building a PC, though I bought a PSU that only had one EPS cable and needed an extra cable.

i accidentally dropped a pea sized thermal paste onto the CPU socket....................................... yes the socket.......... (Intel socket)

and it really went deep in there, but thankfully the pins on the socket were actually way stronger than i usually deal with, i was able to brush it off very gently with some alcohol and a toothbrush, took me a long time by brushing gently, but eventually it was all gone and clean :)

it was f****** terrifying.

Another thing sprang to mind thanks to your post. Thanks!

As I was finishing my current build up and tried to turn it on with the power button, it wouldn't go. I checked the power supply cables and everything was alright. Turns out I connected the front panel headers a bit wrong and as a result both buttons are swapped! Can't really be arsed to fix it anymore because I got used to it. xD

€: for those wondering, yes i did fix them some time ago

Worst mistake while building? Probably not hooking a cable up or something...I tend to be way too careful when it comes to assembling components I paid a lot of money for.

If the build includes research, I've bought things that was incompatible before...and if build includes modding retired servers...it's just been a fumble fest of "nope won't work".

There's no place like ~

Wow, this would have gave me a heart attack. I'm always worried about thermal paste going into the socket.

yeah :/ but i gotta give props to Asus for such sturdy pins, i have dealt with old motherboard bent pins (LGA775) and they were extremely fragile.

i was pretty amazed how strong they were, i guess no one questions sockets anymore, but i really would like to see comparisons between different manufacturers.

Biggest oopsie is when I had to remove the CPU cooler three times: once to get at the fan header for the cooler, once to install the motherboard power cable, and once to install the M.2 drive. Noctua coolers are pain-in-the-ass huge. I also dropped the motherboard when trying to get it to align with the motherboard back panel.

I did this in front of the client, who paid to watch me build it...
