Why does Linus "pirate" Windows? Because people don't know how it works or even how "pirating" works for that matter...

You can look at it this way, Microsoft ALLOWS people to use Windows 10 without activating it. Microsoft just locks out features like not allowing people to "personalize" it.

If Microsoft didn't want people using Windows without activating it then they would NOT allow it. They would require you to enter in a product key when installing it.

What Microsoft is really wanting to do is count people in their amount of people who use Windows. Activated or not you're still using Windows.

Something Something, Mac OSX 10.9 Snow Leopard Keynote, something something Windows has an underlying foundation that is anti-user friendly.

Spoiler

A lot of these criticisms, including the Windows method of "activating a license" is just a bad thing for users are, imo, still valid today. Windows 7 was just another version of Vista and Windows 10 is just another version of 7. Same underlying tech, same underlying problems.

Just my opinion btw.

But Linus does take the logical path here so he does not have to deal with Microsofts ugly activation process. He is using the system to his benefit, which in this specific case is a good thing I think.

This is not pirating .

I think he does that because he does not need to buy a windows license or log into his Microsoft account every time he benchmarks a pc

You mean as anti-consumer as only letting people use your OS if they buy your hardware and not having the option to buy it outright? Now that is an underlying foundation that is anti-user friendly...

Well the two OSes are intended for different things. MS sells their OS for wide distribution. The last time Apple tried that the user experience tanked. Something that has been happening to Windows 10 imo.

While I would like macOS to be a single, sellable license. I also don't want to deal with any product keys or other, imo, BS that would also be associated with that. I have a problem with the business model of Windows but if macOS became more like Windows in that you could buy it...well then I would also have to dislike macOS on principle.

Some people actually think Linus uses pirated Windows? That not pirated, Microsoft does let you try it out for normally 30days before you have to buy a license and activate it.

The reason why it's not activated is because they're constantly reviewing new stuffs and keep on reactivating would be a hassle, when the windows, isn't going to be a permanent install.

You don't even have to do that. You get limited in some features after that period, but tbh it is still usable. MS would rather Windows 10 be free so they could get that sweet sweet telemetry from everyone.

The water mark is really the only big thing. Paying $100+ for the OS is, imo, something I would rather not deal with. All my Windows keys, with the exception of a Windows 7->10 upgrade have all been from Grey Market sources.

It always amuses me how using windows in a legal way is so much harder than not doing so... I'm sure a lot more people would buy a legitimate license if it didn't come with so much bullshit. I dream of the day when I can get rid of windows completely.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
