TL;DR, Riley's acting and timing on that joke were so good thanks to that chemistry that it fooled everybody.

What actually fooled everybody is how serious Linus looked and sounded when he said those words. Had he said simply "hahaha, nope", everything would be cool but he did elaborate that you will be doing that because you are more qualified.

I can guarantee you that people will misinterpret the situation because Linus used a look and a tone managers use when they tell an underling that they will not get a raise or promotion because of their lack of qualifications.

Just look at YT comments under that video ;-)

This didn't feel like the normal banter. You don't act that well if it is fake disappointment. The tone you took when saying that Anthony is more qualified is literally corporate nonsense. The fact that you had to respond in this manner is proof that people didn't find it funny. You won't end up reading this, which is obvious from a self-awareness point of view, but don't become what you hate. It will only lead to those that appreciate you moving on.

Riley is employed with LMG part time as an on screen presenter/host for the TechLinked channel, as well as writer for that channels content.

Anthony is employed as a writer for LMG who is charged with the task of performing benchmarks on new hardware and co-writing the content for the videos based on those hardware reviews and benchmarks he performs.

If an employee asks their boss "Do you want me to perform work that is outside the scope of my job description and qualifications?" and the boss responds with "No, that's not necessary. We have another employee who is more qualified and employed specifically for that purpose", and you get offended by the bosses answer - You're a snowflake.

People are far too easily offended on behalf of other people by complete non-issues these days. Step away from the twitter and the reddit where everyone is always finding something to be offended by and your life will be a lot more enjoyable and positive.

Though, I did find it funny how at the start Riley asked if they had a powerful enough 'Engine' to run the dual stream, and Linus [playfully] grilled him about it using computer processing power and not "engine power"... Only a minute later to begin explaining that the dual stream set up relies on NginX (pronounced 'Engine-X'). :D

It's not about being offended at every turn of nonsense on the internet. Yes, there is a more qualified employee at the company. It's the optics of how it went down. It didn't feel to a great number of comments on the video that it was handled properly. Claiming this offense overload as an excuse for this scenario is not valid. This felt like an employer putting down an employee live on the internet. While it could very well be the acting of the century on Riley's part, which I doubt :), there seemed to be some legitimate ego overload in the tone. That's the end of my thoughts as a very long-term watcher of content.

If LMG was a horrible place to work and anyone actually took me seriously about this stuff, we'd probably have a little more turnover, don't you think? These are very talented people who could get a job tomorrow if they felt like it.

As long term follower of LMG and NCIX (RIP) I can confirm this was business as usual for these two larakins, friendly banter at its finest. Wasn't even cringe worthy tbh.

Hell, I was thrown off guard by it. Normally Linus can't stop from grinning at his own jokes (and I mean that in a nice way), so when he says something with a straight face you assume it's serious.

On another note, I didn't get a notification about them streaming.

The whole point of the discussion is that we had to witness it on the WAN show, not that Linus didn't have the right to tell him no because of his qualifications. It's uncomfortable to watch, that's all.

One of the most important rules when managing people is that when you have some comments about their behavior, work or their qualifications you do not address them in front of your customers.

LTT is a pretty easy going enterprise so if Linus said something in jest about his worker being a noob or smth it would be fine.

It's just this situation looked raw and serious. There is a reason why people who have been watching LTT for some time now felt that something was wrong - because it didn't look like your typical LTT-style teasing banter.

Now, Linus has spoken and I truly believe that reading too much into this situation isn't healthy. I'm just saying that I understand why so many people are commenting on the situation.

On twitch or Youtube? I didn't receive a notification for either.
Twitch has changed the way it delivers notifications about twitch streamers you're following going live in the last week. They're running a new system where you only get notified if Twitch thinks you're active and are likely to tune in.

I received a notification for Youtube for the video about Linus' car which was streamed just before the WAN show, but no notification for the WAN show going live. So my guess is it's just Youtube realising that they've already streamed recently any not sending out multiple notifications.

@LinusTech I appreciate that you addressed the concerns quickly, and glad that it was just banter.  One thing to consider - Riley is still relatively new to LTT viewers.  While you have a long relationship with him, the viewers don't (at least within the context of LTT).  From that perspective it was uncomfortable to watch.  Looking at the ~25% downvote on YouTube I would say a sizable chunk of your viewers did not like it.

If it had been Dennis, Luke, or especially James it would have way less awkward.

To be honest, that part was really painful to watch because Linus said it to Riley with a straight face. If he hadn't replied to this topic, and also to folks who replied to his tweet (https://twitter.com/LinusTech/status/1035783121663287296) where some have been following both of them since NCIX days, I would've hated Linus already. And if it's a normal thing for them, then that's fine with me.

Now that I think about it, I hope no one else would react or reply to my comment in Youtube because I now cannot bear the negative comments there.

If Linus and Riley are good, then I'm good. That's all that matters.

I think the problem is, it seems there's quite a few who never watched NCIX TechTips. Which would explain this whole ordeal. I remember I came across Linus & NCIX TechTips probably close to 10 years ago in the very early days of NCIX. I've always loved Riley or Keys (anyone know why he dropped that nickname..?) and I love that he is apart of LMG/LTT now.

He asked to review a graphics card as a total joke. That's not his forte and he's perfectly comfortable with that. Even back at NCIX Tech Tips (as he mentioned on the WAN Show today) he got Ivan's help with a lot of the benchmarking stuff. Big deal.

You also need to understand that he's not some intern who isn't sure about his job security or his skills. Evaluating gaming cards may not be one of them but who cares? That's not what he was hired to do.

Riley was brought in as a specialist for TechLinked.

Something you guys might also not realize is that Riley is perfectly comfortable dishing out his share of trolling off-camera - even if he's not sure where the limits are yet with the live audience.

So it's probably worthwhile to try re-watching with all of that in mind..

I've not at all had any impression that Linus was rude on purpose to Riley watching this WAN show, people don't seem to get that how you're joking depends as much on the person you're joking with and your dynamic with them as it does on yourself.

Riley (as far as i can tell from TechLinked) tends to make deadpan jokes with a dry delivery, so it only makes sense for me that Linus would not smirk or smile as much with his jokes, especially coming from a serious topic. And Riley being "hurt" by that? I mean, he obviously just didn't know a good comeback to continue the banter?

Seems like a big chunk of the audience just doesn't know someone is joking if there's no Luke opposite, who's directly cracking up and holding his left boob while laughing too loud. :D

I wouldn't mind this host combination again, I very much enjoyed the dry banter and once they get a bit more practice, I'm sure the jokes will also hit the audience better. (although I do miss regular Luke :( )

Also, I hope they have a ton of fun during the vacation. Maybe we'll get a nice vlog or even a channel super fun out of it?

Can't believe all the cuffuffle over this week's WAN show.  Seriously ever since Luke went to Floatplane. The WAN show has taken on a new style/dynamic.  Often enough when Linus is a host he will be joined by James.  Even Dennis had a go and now Ridley.

Go back and watch the banter Linus and James had on there first outing.  Linus treated him the same, with general on screen banter and putdowns.  I remember Linus looking peeved or even annoyed that James was wearing those rediculas Laser Glasses, hence a legend was born.  Fast forward a few WAN shows you can see James is much more comfortable hosting with Linus.  Giving as good as he gets.

In my opinion The Goat comment shocked Riley far more, than the Anthony statement.

Can't wait to see who hosts the next show after their workation.

Hope the negative comments are NOT the final straw.  Linus could easily decide the WAN show has run its course. He could just hand the hosting reins to someone else....

Peace out.
