RTX or current gen?

I'm building my first gaming PC but I don't know if i should wait for more than a month for the RTX 2070 which will be 600$ or just buy a GTX 1080 which is 400$ right now and save 200$, and if I have enough budget to buy a 600$ card should I just buy a 1080ti now? like do you think a RTX 2070 will even match a 1080ti's performance? Nvidia isn't showing us any benchmarks which makes it hard to decide. Share your thoughts please..

If you can get a 1080 for $400 and it fits in your budget, do it. The draw of RTX is ray tracing, its not going to be like the jump from 9 series to 10 series. For all we know, RTX will perform identically to GTX 10 series because of the extra ray tracing.

If you get a good deal on one, go for the 1080Ti.  If not a 1080 is nice as well.

400~575 dollars

 

a GTX 1080 is a bit meh because the cheaper 1070 Ti has the same gaming capacity once overclocked for always 50 or more dollars cheaper.

 

I would get the 1080 Ti if possible so you're still perfectly relevant even with RTX around, in fact so far it seems the GTX 1080 Ti will remain superior to the RTX 2080 whenever you're not using Battlefield V and Shadow of Tomb Raider Ray Tracing options.

New $525 has been the lowest on a random third part Amazon vendor for Zotac 1080 Ti.  I recently bought the EVGA 1080 Ti iCX for $552 when Ebay adsorbed the 15% off.  

 

So a great deal for new $550 or lower, but again these were one off random sales.  I don't think drastic price cuts cross the board will happen.  However B&H is having a nice sale and a SC2 1080 Ti is $600, so if you can get a 1080 Ti $600 or bellow good deal IMO

choice right now is 1080 ti, , you can get 2 1080 tis for the price of 1 2080 ti. 

 

all signs point to 2080 ti being disappointing for the pricetag and Ray Tracing not ready for actual 60fps gaming, and that 2080 ti will turn out to be a lost gen like fermi.

 

Right now my personal plan is to get a 1080 ti, then a 4k/120hz hdr monitor once budget permits, and sli if necessary. Not gonna touch RT til it's ready.

The patrician thing to do is to buy a 1080TI on the cheap now and if you want to partake in RTX tech down the line, wait for the 7nm successors to the 20 series when the tech will be more optimized and there'll be more games that support it better (hopefully).

 

Let the early adopters beta test RTX and DLSS with the 20 series now and reap the benefits in a year ;)

If you can, wait for 3rd party benchmarks... and from reputable ones such as Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed or even Tech Deals.

 

But if you absolutely must and you want the best performing GPU right now, 1080 ti would be the best deal.
