The primary reason for that is if the transfer bar that operated the lock from the inside broke or got disconnected, you can still get out of the locked vehicle. That's a feature that goes back a long way.

funnily enough Kidnap and Ransom wasn't a subject on career day when I was at school, that was a while ago though.

If you have such young children / babies that can act, it might also be better off to use child seats that stick onto the isofix'es on the back, so that something bad doesn't happen to them during the trip.

Some old Fords had a problem with the ignition that locked the doors regardless of what, burned the car and killed the people inside. That was terrible.
