Regardless of validity, it's WCCFTech after all, I'm pretty excited what kinda performance something like that brings to the table.

We have some fresh Rumours considering an RTX 2080 ti to be released!

Who are their "three independent sources" you might ask,

Is this just another clickbait?

I can see this happening if they're on the 12nm node, 7nm isn't far off and they'll want a new range out within 18 months or so to start the process all over again.

Both. Machine learning can reduce the brute force required to do ray tracing. That's how Volta does it and it does not have the RT cores of the recently revealed Turing Quadro cards.

 

Edit: although Nvidia did say Volta had "ray tracing engine(s)" - whatever that means. Nvidia never (to my knowledge) explained what that meant.

That’s what I thought as well but looking over the Turing announcement press releases sources are saying those Quadrio cards that were announced have both ray tracing cores and tensor cores. Maybe this leak is just missing mention of the ray tracing cores.

 

”Turing is designed to boost that kind of imaging, with dedicated RT Cores working together with Tensor Cores that use AI inferencing to enable real-time ray tracing.”

I think they'll use the tensor cores for fast AI based denoising of the very grainy (only very few samples per pixel) raytracing output to make it look good in realtime.

I just watched the whole Jensen presentation at Siggraph yesterday... possibly the most entertaining CEO of a computer tech company. If you know a more entertaining CEO, let me know. Anyway, my understanding is that a lot of the work is done "traditionally" through rasterisation. The raytracing is in addition to that, but the number of rays isn't enough for a clean image. The tensor cores have a trained deep learning network to denoise the raytraced output, and the lot can then be combined for potentially stunning lighting output compared to what we have now. I just hope developers don't over-do it because they can. Implicitly that also gives a layer of backwards compatibility for the vast majority of the market which wont have RT for a long time.

 

 

I was also going over the numbers. Comparing the rumoured 2080 Ti to the RTX 6000/8000, we get 17/18 the CUDA cores, and 11/12 the ram bandwidth. I haven't seen final details yet, but from the presentation the RTX 6000 and 8000 have the same claimed raytracing performance, differing only by vram at 24 and 48GB respectively, and $6300/10000. The RTX 5000 has 16GB at around 2/3 the performance of the higher models, and only $2300. The 2080 non-Ti would seem to be a close parallel to the 5000.

It really doesnt make sense for Nvidia to release the 2080ti this early. I for one will remain skeptical until Tuesday

And here I sit reading this, with a GTX 275 in my hand

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Unless it''s priced much higher than a 2080 and the Titan is $3K but offers something else to the table

Unless they purposely leave the "uncut" dies to the Quadros this go around. Which could be a possibility considering the Titan V isn't full either.

My guess is that the 2080 runs with 23 SMs, while the actual die has 24 SMs at fabrication, which will go in the 2k USD Quadro cards. 

 

It's all but confirmed the 2080 Ti is at least being announced at the same time, with maybe a slight delay in launch. As a few of the industry watchers are noting, it means 7nm Nvidia cards aren't too far away. 12-18 months, more than likely.

If NVidia can push 2080 TIs now and get to 7nm upgrades in 12-18 months, I fear for the competition.

 

We had a discussion that NVidia would not try to get that monopoly, due to restrictions. It would be easier for them to let AMD still be around.

Right now I fear they may not care about that, due to Intel coming to the market (soonish).

 

Maybe they go all in now and in a year, pushing AMD out and preparing for Intel as a serious competitor. 

Sad for AMD fans, but actually great for everyone else. Great hardware now, great hardware in a year and upcoming competition in two years.

 

We would still be stuck with two company only tho. So /sadface if that happens. At least long term. Short term this would rock. ;-)

The decision AMD made back in the ~2014 range to keep GCN for another generation means we really won't be seeing AMD try to compete against Nvidia at the very high-end until 2021, at the earliest. Thus, Nvidia has every reason to press their advantage in the areas they have it in.

 

What that actually means is producing really big dies & selling them for a lot. Realistically, it's not a great place to be for a semiconductor company, but Nvidia's dominant market position let's them go with the Server First approach.

 

AMD only had to compete with the xx70 class GPUs until they completely replace GCN, which is precisely why we're going to get the RX 600/700 series in Q2 next year on 7nm and at around 200 mm2 dies. AMD will hold onto their ~35% market share in dGPUs and look to finally MCM those things together for the Compute market. 

 

For the time being, if you're buying high-end graphics, Nvidia will still be the way to go, though the that's still a really small part of the market. The 1060 replacement is actually more important to Nvidia than the 2080 will be.
