Threadripper 2700X Sluggish Windows Performance?

Hi guys,

 

A few days ago I built myself a rather exciting new rig (at least for me) that looks and runs great... most of the time.

I am having an issue with latency within windows itself - opening Mozilla, for example, can take over 10 seconds to load! I am finding that most processes like launching programs, opening folders etc is taking a long time, however I have run tests within games and can run fortnite, WoW, CS:GO all on the highest possible specs and achieve solid 60/120 fps.  I usually pride myself on being able to sort out small problems like these, and read other forums too, however I haven't had any luck.

Running bcdedit /enum and useplatformclock is set to 'no'

Have run crystaldiskand all good

updated all bios/motherboard drivers

checked all settings in my AI Suite 3

Um yeah post your specs cause your clearly confused as to what cpu you have the 2700x is not a TR chip

Well aren't you helpful. If you'll notice he isn't having problems in game. It's standard OS type operations he is struggling to diagnose.

run some memory tests and see if it throws up any errors

I see you use ai suite if you overclocked with that garbage reset your cmos delete that shit from your system reset to optimized defaults and overclock from the bios if you overclocked with it it may retain settings the conflict with your system this has been a problem with Ryzen

As for it not being a gaming rig - clearly, it can be, as i can run all the games i want to be playing at top settings.  I am a graphic design and work in both post-production as well as print media, so the system first and foremost is set up to be a work machine, but also allow me to play games, thus the multi-thread.  So please don't get on the intel/amd bashing stuff.  

@Mrbilky I do have ai suite so i will look at removing that and resetting the CMOS too as I probably tried it out thinking what's this new fandangled thing that isnt bios OC'ing. @Stealth80 what memory tests are you referring do? I'd appreciate some pointers of what I can do!

Yeah give it a go I know from experience and as others have posted those software overclock suites are not playing nice with Ryzen not sure if this has occurred with Intel chips

Looks to me like it may have solved the issue somewhat.  I still find after a few hours of the system running the programs slow down a lot, but opening explorer and mozilla etc now takes maybe 3-4 seconds rather than 10+.  There was a huge pain in the ass of resorting out the asus aurasyncstuff as the gskill ram seemed to drop off it and do it's own thing, but a few hours later I have restored control over that.  I imagine any other slowness in the system now would be expected.

it seems that running file explore is fine now - when I click the icon it opens immediately.   But running apps/programs is even worse now.  Just waited over a minute for firefox to open, 2 minutes for discord to open.   What would be slowing the system running programs, but not explorer?   Still no delay/issues when IN The programs, only when launching them.

Well now it is sounding more like a network issue firefox and discord both go over the network are you on wifi or hardwired? I would open a hardware monitor app and see what is going on there

Two things I would verify at this point:

1:Was it a fresh windows install on the drive you are using to boot? I didn't see you mention that

2: This could be a network issue. I would make sure you have the latest network driver installed right off your motherboards website

 

If both of those are done already, may consider a fresh install of windows again just to rule it out.

Yes it is a fresh install - bought win10 and installed directly to the M.2 Sata drive (also new).  AS for the network speed things - its not just discord and firefox but all programs, and neither of those programs are hanging on a login type issue, its just it seems to take a long time for the window to even come up.  I am running over WIFI and will check the drivers now as Mr Bilky suggested too, have also installed  CPUID HWMonitorPro but not too sure what I do with it

Oh have also run:

CHKDSK /R
SFC /SCANNOW

 

no issues there either

I feel I may have solved the issue -  I spent some time in the BIOS and found a few things that didn't add up to me, firstly I noticed the RAM speed set in the bios wasnt the same as what was installed? so set the ram settings from auto over to 3200MHz.  I also have thrown the computer onto one of the preconfigured OC settings in BIOS.  everything runs instantly now so am unsure if its the OC that's helping or having set the clock speed of the ram.  But for now, seems stable and happy, discord opens instantly, so does firefox and adobe CC.  Will need to keep an eye on the temp and maybe upgrade the cooling.

Well not sure what the real fix was but clearly the ai suite is now douched from your system and I'll stand by that!
