Intel announced that Raja Koduri (Ex-Senior VP and Chief Architect at AMD) will be joining them to develop integrated and discrete graphics solutions for the blue giant. As we all know, Intel doesn’t have an actual discrete solution of their own and they would require someone with expertise in this field to develop a graphics architecture that will power their future chips. Raja is just the person that Intel was looking for and in less than a year, Intel is finally showing us the first official teaser of their upcoming discrete graphics card.

lets hope Intel can steal some market share from Nvidia because Amd is clearly not competing anymore.

In a perfect world these GPUs will be between AMD in Compute Performance and Nvidia in Graphics Performance all while being reasonably priced. We can only hope.

 

And hope it's not just software emulation of hardware again... or cancelled.

Nice, hope it isn't cancelled

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Why are they teasing things that won't be out for at least 18 months, and, if on 10nm, might even be delayed further?

that would not be a perfect world, the perfect world would be multiple players on all markets not one in each, its the only way to force innovation and progress, though i would prefer if the new player in the market wasn't intel, nvidea is enough of a jackass we don't need two of them,

They're measuring in different ways, and it could be argued what's relevant here.

 

Steam is likely biased towards gamers, so maybe more indicative of discrete GPUs, although there is likely some integrated GPU/APU in there also.

 

The 2nd chart, I presume would be heavily skewed by the GPU built into most Intel consumer CPUs.

 

I think the first is probably more interesting to the context of this thread. Intel are moving into discrete GPUs, so that is the pie they want a slice of.

would we though ? after all they already have an agreement with amd to prevent just that, the question is will it also apply to the new dgpus?

Didn't their agreement with nvidia really never have expiration date just expiration date on when new patents licenses to be shared?

I wonder if DX12 reliance on developer optimization vs driver optimization required of DX11 and earlier played into intel's choice to try to get into desktop graphics

Actually knowing Intel on the graphics front this will be a really strong compute competitor even if it has half the performance of an Nvidia competitor.

 

And we already know that it's not made for consumer gaming >.> If you're expecting a product that's going to smash a 1080TI on Crysis you're likely to be sorely disappointed. Everything we know about the plan for these cards is for them to be totally compute focussed with a consumer version being added in as an afterthought to help with mindshare.

Umm what? Intel has literally the best driver stack of the three which is really awkward considering how underpowered their GPUs are. The Intel Open Source Graphics drivers are freaking amazing. They were the first Open Source drivers to get full OpenGL 4.5, GLES 3.2, and Vulkan 1.0 certification.

 

Keep in mind that these are compute cards primarily with rumors being that they originally didn't even plan on a gaming version of the card.

 

By contrast Nvidias driver stack is a mess of proprietary firmware and blobs which in a lot of cases would be fine but with Graphics cards means that a lot of weird stuff breaks on high end compute systems.

 

And AMD's drivers are open but they're a fustercluck of 3 different compute frontends on top of three different driver backends. The whole Orca/PAL/ROCm on fglrx/AMDGPU/AMDGPU-Pro with and without Displaycode support thing is a nightmare for trying to get different hardware working together.
