Do you need the 8 and 4 pin connector on the Asus rog crosshair vi hero 

 

And if you do you have any recommendations on what power supply to use

Generally, they're just running in parallel, so connecting one should work. 

Hard to make recommendations without knowing your system specs or what's available where you'll buy the PSU.

According to page 25 of the manual it says it won't boot without both of them connected.

You could try it with one and then upgrade if it won't boot.
