Should I get a gaming laptop for school?

Hi,

 

I’m looking for a laptop for school. I wanted a laptop that was well priced, and was capable of doing light gaming. I found the Acer nitro 5. It seems like a very amazing laptop, my only problem with it is battery life and the fact that it’s bulky. Then I took a different approach and began searching for a laptop that had much better battery life and was slim. I found the Asus Vivobook. Both are amazing laptops, but I don’t know which to get, one is much thicker with worse battery life not to mention heavier while the other is slim, has better battery life and lighter but isn’t that good for gaming (it does have a MX150). Which one should I get? Keep in mind, I already have a powerful gaming rig at my house.

I'd argue heavily for going for a lighter laptop with a better battery but a worse GPU over getting a gaming laptop.

The MX150 isn't great, but it's absolutely no slouch, either.

To answer the title, no. If you specifically need it for school, a "gaming" laptop is the last thing you want. You won't be playing a lot of games in school anyway, there's no point in making the rest of your experience worse for a few extra fps or slightly higher settings.

 

I personally recommend refurbished x series thinkpads, they're cheap, light and durable. If money isn't a concern, a new thin-and-light (such as the vivobook) is probably more up your alley.

I used to have a gaming laptop for school back in the day, but I got rid of it beacuse of the heft. It was cumbersome to carry around and the battery life was quite poor too. When I went to college I bought a Cheap HP ultra book that I still use today- the battery life is better and it weighs 1/2 of what the gaming laptop did.

It makes way more sense to get a slim laptop with good battery life to school, especially since you have a gaming rig already. It is super annoying to run out of battery in the middle of a day and then drag a heavy and bulky laptop around.

Get something with amazing battery life. You're at school, you should be focusing on classes, not gaming. Not only that, why make it so you have to carry around a 2lb brick with you as well?
