ALSO Fortnite already skipped Steam, but also ditching Google Play Store - storefronts getting too big for their own good?

  • Discord has begun slowly rolling out a beta test to 50,000 Canadian players who will see an upgraded version of Discord Nitro that has access to a curated selection of games along with the current subscription perks. They’ll also see a new Discord Store tab in the home screen with individual games for purchase.

  • The store will showcase a curated list of titles with descriptions written by Discord staff

  • The store will feature “First on Discord” titles — indie games that they’ve helped bring to life.

    • These games are temporarily exclusive, usually 90 days

    • This beta won’t have any First on Discord titles

  • They’ll be adding a Universal Library tab to the Discord home screen

    • If you want, Discord can scan your computer for games.

    • Then, you’ll be able to launch any of your games through Discord even if they require another launcher (Discord will boot the other launcher and game)

New MITM attack Hacks laptop via charger

Source 1: Master Disaster https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/958460-interesting-new-mitm-attack-demonstrated-your-laptop-can-probably-be-hacked-via-its-charger/

Source 2: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45139397

  • A Security researcher by the name of MG has devised a way to attack Macbooks through their USB type C charging ports by altering the charger’s adapter.

    • MG is early in the testing phase, but he predicts the attack would likely work on any machine that uses USB-C to get its power.

  • MG gutted the inside of the charger and filled it with “small components” that are powered up when the unsuspecting victim connects the charger to their computer.

    • The charger still works like normal

  • The hijacking device was able to insert a fake login screen into a website. Were he to use this technique for real, he could use this method to scoop-up whatever data I entered into the fake site.

    • "this can also inject malware, root kits and persistent types of infections that could be malicious.”

  • The attack principle is not new.In mobile phones, where the charging point is often the same slot through which the device sends and receives data, hackers have been known to carry out so-called “juice jacking” attacks.

UK broadband providers Advertising unrealistic speeds

Source 1: rcmaehl https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/956948-snap-uk-internet-speeds-dont-feel-so-good-new-rules-drop-internet-speeds-by-almost-50/

Source 2: https://www.mirror.co.uk/money/advertised-broadband-speeds-now-41-13028208?ref=rcmaehl

  • Most UK broadband providers have been forced to cut their advertised speeds following a recent rule change.

  • 11 of the biggest broadband providers have had to cut the advertised speed of some of their deals since the new rules came into effect in May, with the cheapest deals dropping by an average 41%.

    • BT, EE, John Lewis Broadband, Plusnet, Sky, Zen Internet, Post Office, SSE, TalkTalk and Utility Warehouse previously advertised their standard broadband deals as "up to 17Mbps" but the new advertised speed is now more than a third lower at 10Mbps or 11Mbps

  • Previously, providers were allowed to advertise "up to" speeds as long as they were available to a minimum of just 10% of customers

    • Now  they must ensure that at least 50% of their customers can achieve advertised speeds at peak time.

  • Before the new rules came into effect, British households were paying for broadband services that were on average 51% slower than advertised.

EU Competition Commissioner wants to force Apple to switch to USB-C

Source 1: AluminiumTech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/957580-eu-competition-commisioner-wants-to-force-apple-and-others-to-switch-to-usb-c-industry-standard-for-charging-phones/

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/08/eu-taking-another-look-at-phone-chargers-because-theyre-still-not-standardized/

  • For the better part of a decade, the EU has been pushing phone manufacturers to standardize the chargers they use, in an effort to cut the amount of electronic waste they generate.

  • Phones typically come with a charger, and customers often toss the old charger when they buy a new phone.

    • Ideally, old chargers are recycled, but they often find their way into a landfill, with the EU claiming that some 51,000 tons of waste are generated each year.

    • The EU's long-term goal is that phones and chargers should ultimately be bought separately, with one charger being retained across multiple phone generations.

  • In 2009, manufacturers including Apple, Samsung, and Nokia, signed a memorandum of understanding to say they would voluntarily standardize on the then-current micro-USB connector.

  • However, regulators are unsatisfied with this voluntary approach. In response to a query about phone chargers, EU Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager said, "Given the unsatisfactory progress with this voluntary approach, the Commission will shortly launch an impact assessment study to evaluate costs and benefits of different other options."

Magic Leap One Creator Edition released

  • Magic Leap has been teasing a revolutionary augmented experience since 2014, when they secured over $500 million in funding from Google and others

  • Previously said they would use “light-field” tech that shoots images directly into your RETINA

  • Company has now released developer version of headset for $2,295, and it’s basically the same as a Hololens in terms of experience (but without benefit of Windows + Microsoft software)

  • Headset: “Lightwear” - wearable computer pack - “Lightpack” - controller - “Control”

  • Not much software available for it, no light field tech,

  • If anything, could just serve to jumpstart the AR industry by fueling more innovation?

Another ROM site bites the dust… are ROMs over?or are they just getting started? ;) … or ...NOT THAT?

Source 1: Techicolors

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/958670-emulation-hub-emuparadise-removed-all-roms-fearing-legal-action/

  • Nintendo filed lawsuits against two huge emulator sites, LoveRETRO and LoveROMs for $150,000 per game and up to $2 million per trademark

  • No doubt looking to avoid a similar fate, EmuParadise, another hub for emulation resources, said it’s no longer hosting ROMs

  • Apparently one of the few places that aren’t plagued by pop-ups and glitchy nonsense

  • There are still lots of places to get ROMs but will this continue?

  • Why doesn’t Nintendo just provide this service themselves?

  • Is ROM emulation morally good?

  • Is objective morality a physical truth?

Elon Manipulates Tesla Stock

Source 1: Taf the Ghost https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/957632-elon-taking-tesla-private/?page=2&tab=comments#comment-11626821

Source 2: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-08-09/tesla-is-said-to-face-broader-sec-scrutiny-over-musk-statements

  • Elon Musk’s tweet Tuesday announcing that he was “considering taking Tesla private” may have been illegal

  • The specific regulation lawyers believe Musk could have broken in his “funding secured” tweet is 14e-8 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, which prohibits publicly traded companies from announcing plans to buy or sell securities if executives don’t intend to complete, don’t have the means to complete, or are trying to manipulate the stock price.

  • Using Twitter to disclose market-moving information has been allowed since 2013, when the Securities and Exchange Commission blessed social media as a valid disclosure method—as long as companies give investors a heads-up they would post it there.

    • This becomes problematic if some investors can get information earlier than others due to the latter being blocked

  • the SEC looks at social media announcements through the lens of fair disclosure requirements, as defined in a rule known as Regulation FD.

    • Companies’ communication methods must be “reasonably designed to provide broad, non-exclusionary distribution of the information to the public,” according to the rules.

  • Stock price was 340, went to 380, and is now at 355

Fortnite skipping Play Store may lead to more malware

Source 1: rcmaehl

Source 2:

  • Steam and Google Play aren’t just there to make money, they also screen potentially malicious apps and games

  • In order to install Fortnite you’ll have to allow Android to install apps from outside sources

  • Some people may go looking for the Fortnite APK online, so someone could easily upload a fake
