[Build Log] - The big LITTLE computer.

MedievalMatt

Ill post pics as I go.  Im sort of sidegrading/upgrading my setup, its a bit of a process so i felt like detailing it.

Currently, I have a windows ITX PC that i use for gaming.  Its got a 6700K, and a 1070, with 32GB of RAM, and a  512GB NVMe SSD.  I also have a Linux PC that i use as a daily driver.  Its rocking an i7 860, 12GB of RAM, and some random SSD i had lying around.

The plan:

Keep the ITX rig as a gaming rig, new motherboard, and some other odd-n-ends, largely the same.

Get a new Linux machine, R5 2400G, 16GB of RAM, NVMe storage.  Whole new thing.

I also want to consolidate the same a bit, since have two systems in two cases scattered around is annoying.  So a dual motherboard PC case is in order.

Shopping list:

  • Phanteks Phanteks Enthoo Mini XL Dual System Case
  • 2 of Phanteks 24 Pin/ 8pin (4+4) M/B, 8pin (6+2) PCI-E Extension Cable Kit 500mm Length, Green (PH-CB-CMBO_GR)
  • GIGABYTE GA-Z270N-WIFI
  • 3 of Monoprice 6inch 3.5mm Stereo Jack/Two 3.5mm Stereo Plug Cable
  • 4 of Noctua NF-F12 PWM Cooling Fan
  • 2 of JET-5608AK - (DDR4 SODIMM to DIMM Adapter w/ Metal Guide)
  • CORSAIR HX Series, HX1200, 1200 Watt, Fully Modular Power Supply, 80+ Platinum
  • MSI ProSeries AMD Ryzen B350 Mortar
  • Noctua NH-D14
  • Thermaltake Commander FT Touch Screen 5 Channel Single 5.25" Bay Cooling Fan Controller
  • Noctua NM-AM4 Mounting Kit for Noctua CPU coolers on AMD AM4 platforms
  • AMD Ryzen 5 2400G Processor with Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics
  • Noctua NH-L12S
  • WD Black 256GB Performance SSD - 8 Gb/s M.2 PCIe NVMe
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz

Ive placed the orders, waiting for parts to start showing up.  Ill update with pics as i go.

Sorry this update took so long, havent had much time to devote to this.

Got the AMD CPU installed in the board, and the RAM + NVMe.  Still waiting on the PSU to fully test the system.

Got the CPU RAM and Heatsinkinstalled.  The clearance is less than 1mm.

Yea.  Im selling those modules soon and getting some Vengence LPX sticks from corsair which will be a big improvement.  Im just glad that the fan is mountable on top of the fin stack.

So.... protip for anyone thinking of using these DDR4 SODIMM adapters in a ITX build....theyll fit under a NHL12s lol :D

The case and PSU finally arrived.

The so-called "Mini" XL is a lot more XL than it is mini.  It should be called the "XL Mini"

Its closer to a smaller super tower than a larger regular tower.

I got the ITX board in.  It looks hilarious all by  itself.

20180810_110109.thumb.jpg.9af70bc135b93169473be45426f17357.jpg

A wider shot

20180810_110118.thumb.jpg.09d83ee1a85db697389f6ff71dff84b3.jpg

I went to put in the mATX board, which went in fine.... but the NH-D14 had some issues with the GPU from the ITX system.  I raged a bit, not gonna lie.

20180811_155943.thumb.jpg.f03a7c8f6c8ebe9ff81c46f4ebb2ed99.jpg

That shot makes it look tight, but fine.  but the mounting screws are about 3CM off.  I tried flipping the orientation, but that only made the clearance worse.

20180811_155933.thumb.jpg.0573df1d85090af1bff8213194770214.jpg

Im going to cry myself to sleep.

Looks good AF

and it weighs like 90 pounds.

Both machines can be used simultaneously off the 1200 Watt PSU.  and its virtually silent.
