Need help with VM or optimization

I need Java ,SQL and all other stuff installed on my laptop for my studies.the problem is that it really sucks the life out of windows,my laptop gets laggy. I did a fresh install recently and it runs much better.

However I need to install these programs again.i was thinking of using a virtual machine but the last time I did that the performance loss was too great for everyday use.i have an i5 6th gen cpu,940mx 2gb graphics and (sadly)hdd.is there a way to install them without affecting windows? It can be any solution other than a VM I don't mind

Running both Windows and a bunch of VMs on a single harddrive is a bad idea, especially with SQL. I'd buy an SSD and an external enclosure. Clone your Windows to the SSD, use the HDD as an external drive to run your VM on.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

The price of ssd in India is very high and currenty cant spend that much on it.

You could just install all of those programs again, but not have them constantly running in the background.

Installed programs don't affect performance as long as they aren't running.

Then you'll have to live with the fact that your programs (when running) will cause overall slowdown. SQL is a tough program and hammers your disk when hard at work, and it also likes a good amount of RAM, so yeah. Wanting to do a lot at once on a performance limited system while expecting perofmance to stay top notch is unrealistic, I'm afraid.

I'm pretty sure SQL and jave, etc will affect the performance of Windows.

I get that.i am not asking for the impossible.i was wondering maybe there's a light weight option or a trick to avoid slowing down Windows that maybe I don't know about

Windows 10 is generally not that quick on a harddisk, I've found, so there's not a lot you can do but make do with what you've got. I'd make getting an SSD top priority, though, as you can dedicate your current drive to everything else that way.

Linux...?

Using a virtual machine adds some overhead, which decreases performance slightly. Type 2 hypervisors such as VirtualBox have much higher overhead than Type 1 hypervisors, such as ESXi.

Look into automation tool to automatically install necessary applications, Ninite for example.

HAL9000: AMD Ryzen 9 3900x | Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black | 32 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 MHz | Asus X570 Prime Pro | ASUS TUF 3080 Ti | 1 TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus + 1 TB Crucial MX500 + 6 TB WD RED | Corsair HX1000 | be quiet Pure Base 500DX | LG 34UM95 34" 3440x1440

Hydrogen server: Intel i3-10100 | Cryorig M9i | 64 GB Crucial Ballistix 3200MHz DDR4 | Gigabyte B560M-DS3H | 33 TB of storage | Fractal Design Define R5 | unRAID 6.9.2

Carbon server: Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX100 S7p | Xeon E3-1230 v2 | 16 GB DDR3 ECC | 60 GB Corsair SSD & 250 GB Samsung 850 Pro | Intel i340-T4 | ESXi 6.5.1

Big Mac cluster: 2x Raspberry Pi 2 Model B | 1x Raspberry Pi 3 Model B | 2x Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+
