4th gen i7 vs 8th gen i3

So i am making a mini ITX build for my daughter. 

 

I was planning to do the i3-8100 and try to see if the games she will play can be done via the igpu. If not, I'd then get a low level card to go in. 

 

However i just came across the opportunity to buy a used i7-4770 CPU. I am unsure which i should go with and there are conflicting bits of information out there. Some say the i3 has the higher clock while others say the i7.

 

 

I also think the igpu inside of the i7 won't be able to handle as much. 

 

I already have some ddr3, so it would be cheaper than going with the 8100, just because the ram price. Otherwise CPU+Mobo is about the same total.

 

 

This is also meant to be used as a streaming machine when my daughter isn't playing. I also consider this a backup gaming machine; where should my main rig go down, i can move my gtx 1070 into it and go on doing VR.

What games will she play? I'm thinking Ryzen 3 2200G instead.

The i3 8100's iGPU is substantially faster than the i7 4770's. 

 

However if this is going to be an iGPU based gaming system for your daughter, why not a Ryzen APU like the 2200G or 2400G? Either of those will wipe the floor with the i3 8100's iGPU performance.

I'd grab the 4770 as the clock speed hit isn't that much and the cost savings and extra threads are gonna help if she intends to do Photoshop/video editing/whatever on this system

How much is the 4770? It shouldn't be much at all. So, it's hard to say which is the better idea without knowing price.

If it's a good deal, that and something like a GT1030 or GTX1050 would be much, much better combo. Or a used 960, something like that.

For the price of a 1050 ($110) you can get a 970 or R9 290/x

Definitely cannot recommend 1030s these days. Nvidia kind of pulled a little trick by switching out the GDDR5 memory with DDR4 memory in many models. From what I've read, the change is kind of hard to spot from just looking at the box, and spec listings on storefront pages may not be up to date to reflect the DDR4 1030 stock. Memory bandwidth on these new 1030s is about 40% of what the originals had, which cripples performance. 

 

Best to just go with a Ryzen APU or a GTX 1050 for low budget gaming builds, especially when dealing with ITX.

Nobody ever should have recommended a 1030.  Even with GDDR5 memory, it cost twice what it was worth.

The i7 would deff be better out of the two. 

Maybe if these ryzen parrots read the post they'd see he could toss in a gpu and isn't specifically stating a igpu machine and also has ddr3 so that would save home a ton. 

 

I'd get the i7 deff better then the i3 for a backup gaming/streaming machine then a i3 or 2200g would be. 

 

And never get a 1030... For one it's two years old and the lowest specd gpu out and some igpus are better or on par with it. It's horrible to buy being two yr old and having igpus outperform it.

The main issue is that itx 1150 boards seem expensive.

 

I3-8100 is $120

H310 is $55

8gb stick is $70

 

The i7-4770 is $120. 

I already have the ram but will probably need a gpu as it isn't as good as the igpu of the 8100. 

And it is difficult for me to find a good priced Mobo for it. 

 

 

And I'd never use a 1030. If i need something lower than a card series mid-tier (like 1050), then I'd go to a >50 past generation.

You'll need a GPU for the i3 anyway I would imagine. It may be faster but it's not really gaming grade at all. The i7 is definitely faster, that i3 is basically the same as an i5 7500.
