Replaced CPU in a laptop, now its throttling at low temps.

Hiho,

 

I recently upgraded an older Sony Vaio from i5 560m to i7 740qm.

 

Cpu works, its just 10W higher but Intel XTU says its throttling even though its around 45 or 50c? Also HWMonitor says that CPU is only using 14W of power and its meant to use about 45W at its peak since its a 45W CPU.

 

I put Thermal Grizzly on it and spread it evenly on the die. GPU and CPU.

 

GPU is also fine at 48c.

 

Frequency is stuck at 0.93Ghz

 

Therefore its not even reaching its base frequency of 1.73Ghz.

 

I stress tested it in Cinebench R15 and instead of getting around 270 score i got 115 or so.

 

Laptop does not have a battery, it uses ac adapter.

 

All settings in windows enabled to performance. In power options appropriate sliders are set to 100% also.

 

Anything I can do guys?

I'm not specifically familiar with the Sonys, but I know with the Dells, when they are retrofitted with quad core CPU's, the higher spec power supplies (ie: 90W and higher) become mandatory and the firmware will throttle them to avoid power-supply-induced instability when use is attempted with a PSU that cannot be verified as having a high enough rating.

 

So you'd probably want to research whether that's the case for specifically for the Sonys, and acquire a higher rated power supply adapter accordingly.

Ac adapter is rated at 120w should be fine. However, Intel XTU is showing thermal throttlimg even though temps are low. Thoughts?

Are you sure the throttling is thermal?

Maybe you should increase the voltage as your new CPU is more power hungry.

Fixed, I downloaded "No Throttle" program and I can set multipliers. Works as expected now.

Hey man! I know this is an old thread but I just did the Exact same upgrade as you to a Dell M4500 and also having the same problem! 

 

What's the software you used and what Multipliers did you set.

It is best to start a new thread than to restart a 4 year old thread.

 

For Intel CPUs,  give ThrottleStop a try. Try clearing the BD PROCHOT box if your CPU is stuck at the minimum speed.
