i7 8700 normal temperatures

Nubie question?  When you refer to temps, are you refering to average temps, or maximum when tested?

People will usually tell idle and load temps, basically minimum and maximum.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)

You want to look at the maximum when stress testing, doing stuff that puts a huge strain on the cpu. The average is more of like for general gaming, surfing the web, and doing non cpu stressful stuff.

 

If you put it this way, the average is the all the CPU temperatures recorded at the time/the recorded length. So when you want to know if you CPU is getting way too hot while doing anything you can compare how close the average is to the maximum to find out.

 

Example:

Getting an average of 40C, and a max of 72C after an hour, just means your CPU is spiking up that high and it's not really overheating.

 

Getting an average of 80C, and a max of 100C after an hour is showing that your CPU is getting way too hot and the CPU temperature is spiking.

ambient temperature and full-load temperature (Prime95 for example) are what I consider the most important.

Anything under 75C is good. Over 85C is hot, over 95C is dangerous.
