[Mini News] AMD launches Radeon Software 18.7.1 with Up To 28% faster Performance for RX Vega 56 in Earthfall

Nobody reported on this on the forum and I know it's a week old but I thought it was worth posting nonetheless.

 

AMD has launched Radeon Software 18.7.1 and it contains bug fixes and performance improvements.

 

The performance improvements affect the RX Vega 56 8GB, RX 580 8GB, and RX 560 4GB in the new Left 4 Dead 2 inspired game called Earthfall.

 

RX Vega 56 8GB sees Up to 28% faster performance in Earthfall and now delivers a whopping 111.1 fps.

RX 580 8GB sees Up To 22% faster performance in Earthfall and now delivers 75.1 fps.

RX 560 4GB sees Up To 27% faster performance in Earthfall and now delivers a reliable 60fps at Medium Settings

• Fortnite™ Season 5 may experience an application hang on some Radeon graphics products when throwing stars are visible on screen.
• Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice™ may experience flickering or corruption on some Radeon graphics products.
• Display modes may sometimes appear as not available when setting resolution or refresh rates of a display.
• CorelDraw™ may experience slower than expected performance.
• Memory clocks may remain at higher than expected values on some displays after changing resolution or refresh rates.
• Some displays may exhibit black screen flickering when booting to desktop when using DisplayPort.

• Virtual Super Resolution settings may not retain after updating to this Radeon Software release.
• Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus™ may experience an application crash when disabling Asynchronous Compute via game settings.
• Graphics and memory clocks may remain at higher than expected values after watching a video or using Windows DVR while in game. A workaround is to reboot the system.
• Cursor or system lag may be observed on some system configurations when two or more displays are connected and one display is powered off.
• Radeon WattMan gauges may report as zero on secondary graphics products in multi GPU enabled system configurations.

The AMD Forum topic on the issue has identified 2-3 other triggers for the lag going back to post 18.3.3. The trigger that AMD listed is not entirely accurate.

A handful of game reviewers looked at it. Most seem to like it but I think it's not doing great sales figures wise.

Modern GPU drivers are so complicated that every release has some issues...

It's just good practice in software to list the known issues so it's good that AMD and Nvidia do so. Unfortunately some people take it negatively.

While I agree the AMD no drivers meme is a dead horse, that "award" was AMD actually paying a 3rd party company to test their drivers vs nvidia's, they did still win and it was a reputable company but to say they were awarded anything is exaggeration

According to AMD the only way to shake a bad reputation is to give yourself a pat on the back. 

 

Only a handful of people are actually bashing them.  The rest just don't care enough to move on.  You see it with all companies.

Fun fact with that cursor lag: it's not always just the cursor. I had two displays connected to my RX 580 before and after the update. After the update, I experienced massive stuttering in all applications and on the desktop. Hoping for some kind of microfix since I also seemingly cannot roll back.

Need to get DDU. Roll back to AMD Driver version 18.3.3.

1) They did not get an award.

2) That report was funded by AMD, and only tested a single program.

3) The reason this "meme" exist is because historically AMD drivers have been significantly worse. The terrible frame times were known on forums I browsed years before AMD started to investigate it. The cursor corruption glitch was known for like 5 years before it was finally fixed. Their drivers have consistently been found to have significantly higher CPU overhead. There are probably more things I am missing but you get the point. There are good reasons for why AMD have been bashed for their shitty drivers. It seems like a lot has changed in the last couple of years, but reputations like that are hard to get rid of. I mean, just look at Intel and Nvidia. People are still bringing up things they did decades ago and bashing them for that.

It's not every game. It's in a single game.

If it was then I would understand the news thread, but it's just one game, and changes are it ran poorly before and now the results are inline with what should be expected.

I agree. Can change a game from being unplayable to playable which is nothing short of good news depending on the users setup.

7-14fps at 150+fps is not unplayable to playable. Boost resolution to get around the 30fps mark and you are talking 1-2 fps on the high end.

and is that person shady? its like saying anything that linus tests is invalid if he got a review sample since they are paying him with the free review sample. if amd didnt tell the person to award it to them or else they wont pay him then i think its ok

What person are you talking about?

 

Anyway, there was no award. Not sure where that misconception is coming from.

It was just a report from a consulting firm hired by AMD.

 

What happened was that AMD posted a test of a single program, done by a third party company AMD paid to do the test.

For all we know, they could have contacted multiple firms, and gotten 10 reports saying Nvidia drivers were more stable, but they decided to only post the one that showed AMD on top.

Or maybe they requested specific driver versions (for example AMD requested Nvidia drivers they knew had problems in that particular program, and requested using AMD drivers that they knew didn't have as many problems).

 

Since the test was ordered and published by AMD, it should not trusted.

Hell, even if it was trustworthy, it would still just be a single driver version tested, using a single program.

You can't judge overall driver quality by just doing one test on one driver release.
