Google Chrome will use EVEN MORE RAM for Spectre security fixes

ItsMitch

S: Verge

Google Chromie, the notorious eater of Ram in the universe is going to get more scary! Why? Spectre patches are rolling out on the platform to mitigate any kind of attacks to your computer. Google Engineers went on to say this performence hit will be about 10% to 13% but this tradeoff is required to actively protect against Site Isolation.

Quote

Google has revealed this week that its fixes for the Spectre CPU vulnerabilities have caused its Chrome browser to use more memory. In a blog post, spotted by Thurrott, Google details its new Site Isolation feature for the latest Chrome 67 release. It’s a feature, now enabled by default, that’s used to protect against the Spectre side-channel attacks that use the speculative execution features of most processors to access parts of memory that should be restricted. Unfortunately, it has also increased Chrome RAM usage as a result.

Google engineers further went onto explain the exact root of the protection.

Quote

Site Isolation is a significant change to Chrome's behavior under the hood, but it generally shouldn't cause visible changes for most users or web developers (beyond a few known issues). It simply offers more protection between websites behind the scenes. Site Isolation does cause Chrome to create more renderer processes, which comes with performance tradeoffs: on the plus side, each renderer process is smaller, shorter-lived, and has less contention internally, but there is about a 10-13% total memory overhead in real workloads due to the larger number of processes. Our team continues to work hard to optimize this behavior to keep Chrome both fast and secure.

Google still is actively planning on working on optimisation for Chromie... yeah I'm not expecting much, this fucker eats too much ram for my liking.

20 tabs active and only 4.2GB of RAM used. I'm not sure why it's that big of a matter. Sure it's more hungry than other apps like Firefox, but not that big either.

This sounds like a great feature to have even if not for Spectre protection. Personally I don't have any problems with ram usage in Chrome, they could double it and I wouldn't notice.

Those big DRAM chips... That's DDR (unofficially DDR1) memory, 2GB per stick if it's double ranked. In other word's she's just eating 8GB at once. Not that crazy

Honestly with 16gb of ram I don't think I have gone much over 8 gb most of the time. Sometimes I hit 10 to 12 when I have multiple chrome Windows open with many tabs each while also playing games with discord running in the background.

I have 60-80 tabs open and my total system usage of my 32GB is around 16GB, chrome seems to level off on ram usage which is good.

I've been really happy with Firefox, I still use Chrome all the time though; mostly so I don't have to change accounts

That's an F in the profile pic

I'd switch to FireFox but it fucks up Twitter for some reason, makes it look like Mobile so I'm just unable to use it.
