Tech YouTuber GamersNexus' House/Studio almost burned down

AlTech

The Tech YouTuber GamersNexus almost had their House/Studio burned down.

Live Wires hanging inside of Circuit panels left by technicians caused a breaker to jump. This caused very loud arcing of electricity and this almost burned down the GamersNexus House.

The breakers installed by the technicians were also incompatible with GamersNexus' breaker panel.

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from becoming more dangerous. I'm happy that Steve from GamersNexus and Correspondent Snowflake is safe. :)

So yeah, these kinds of things happening are sobering and fire safety in any line of work is incredibly important.

Mods if this isn't really tech news please feel free to move it.

WHAT THE FUCK?!

Sorry, but I hope that Electrician goes to jail!

That's something you always have to remember as an electrician: If you really fuck up, someone looses everything he had and built in his life and maybe even that!

Normally not much happens because of all the regulation, the Parts and some luck (like here), but its a good example of what will happen if you don't really know what you are doing!

People might laugh about "Socialist Germany" but if you order an Electrician, he has to learn that job for 3,5 Years and you know that, in theory, he has to know his shit.

Without an "apprenticeship diploma" you can't do certain jobs and especially as an electrician you have to be certified for many things.
Though some shit most won't ever see, even if it is fun - like programming a PLC Controller (especially that AEG Shit)...

So be wary of your electrician!

And if he comes to you, looks at the stuff you have, tells you:
"Im Sorry, I don't have the right parts and can't do that right now" and leaves. That is a good thing!

People don't understand that using the wrong stuff and "improvising" is what lead to this desaster!!

"Hell is full of good meanings, but Heaven is full of good works"

I wonder if GN's been in contact with the electrician's insurance company. If there's no insurance company then that electrician will be out of business real fast because that's not legal.

So be wary of your electrician!

The thing is, the majority of the people out there will trust the professional hired, and that would include me ; I would've never thought to go and double check what my electrician did.

But after seeing this I went and check my breaker box as I had it changed when I bought my apartment. Thankfully it's all good (checked the box model vs the breakers installed) and there are no live wires hanging anywhere!

But when I hired my electrician, I made sure it was a business that had been opened for more than a few years, I also made sure to get the electrician to sign his quote with the explicit text saying that all the work done was in compliance with the current laws, while that might sound like an obvious thing, but I called and asked my insurance what they needed to make sure they would cover me if anything happened, and they told me I had to get a certified master electrician (told me how to look that up) and a signed electrical inspection (stating that everything checked out) from that same master electrician.

EDIT : but with that said, even with all the precautions I took, it doesn't guaranty that the install is perfect, since like I said, I have no idea what the electrician did (I wasn't the during the install).

I suppose he had insurance? I also hope the company doing his electric work pay the damages on their end.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

I believe the fastest way in the US is 2 years of schooling and 2 years on the job training under a licensed Electrician to get your Journeyman licence.

The problem is you learn the proper way to do it in school for 2 years, then you spend 2 years learning to cut corners and forgetting the proper way. Last year I told the electricians to leave my house after I looked and saw what they were doing, they are nearly all worthless over here in the states and unfortunately required for a lot of work due to the code book they don't follow. My new policy is to hire them to stand and watch me do the work, only letting them do the things I'm absolutely not allowed to do like land wires into the power company's panel, and then sign off on it.

I know right! You'd think if you got a certified and qualified tradesmen they'd actually do their job.

This reminds me of some show "Cowboy Builders" of people that pretend to be licensed and certified and mucking up leaving people out of 10's of thousands.

Whatever happened to that show ? HGTV is kinda boring without it >.>

Well I'm happy to say in my country it's perfectly legal for me to go mess about in my own breaker panel and not have to worry about hiring people. A certification means nothing in this day and age.

I've seen all too many time those so called qualified experts botch a job and then make excuses.

Same. The clownshoe who installed our generator did it wrong and it took service calls over a period of 3 months, a separate company's installer who works on commercial and industrial generators to come do it right. Now its beautifully wired and they ate the cost of replacing the $1000 transfer switch, plus $100 an hour for the electrician and technicians time.

Im a real pain in the ass at the car dealership too. Only one tech is allowed to work on it and onlythe service advisor is allowed to drive it to the service bay.

People are losing all pride and dignity in their work. Its like Atlas Shrugged coming to life.

Here it's required by law for any electrical work to be signed as compliant with electrical safety standards and a compliance certificate issued (and left with the equipment worked on, so in the breaker box in this case). If that has not been done the electrician is automatically liable for any electrical fault in there area they were working regardless if it was anything they worked on or not and they will most likely lose their electrical registration.

The above shouldn't really ever be optional, electricity is super scary stuff and almost impossible to tell if something is wrong until catastrophic failure i.e. it's all good until it really isn't and it happens instantly.

The way it's supposed to work in the states is that when an electrician does any kind of major work such as an upgrade to a panel, addition to a house or anything that requires the removal of walls, they are supposed to get an inspector to sign off on it. Most companies follow this rule very well, but the problem is that not all inspectors are good inspectors. Some of them only check for certain specific things because they don't know as much as an actual electrician. It changes from county to county and even in larger counties it changes from one inspector to the other. There are incompetent electricians (which GN clearly got) that don't always call an inspector either. If this was an independent electrician, he probably won't be in business for much longer, if he was with a larger company, he most likely won't be with them very long either. The electricians insurance company should have covered the damage as the would have needed an insurance company to stay in business. At least in my state it is illegal to be a practiced electrician without an insurance company backing your work.
