Whoosh - The Airplane and Airline Thread

handymanshandle

Why did I not know about this thread sooner! I'm a student pilot, but I have to start from the bottom. I have to take maths courses along with all the other typical gen ed nonsense. Can't fucking wait to get my ass in the air! That may not be till 2021 tho, because I literally just started ;_;

Welcome to the thread! I'm also a student pilot, if you'd like to know, here's a bit about where I'm at in the process:

Spoiler

School has hit me hard this year, which has left essentially no time for flight. Thankfully I've completed my hour requirements, (with a little over a hundred total), but I need to study for the FAA tests. I'm hoping to finally get things done in the spring semester.

Good luck with lessons!

Glad to have more activity in this thread!

Man I wanted to go on an AA MD-80 before they were retired. I remember back when I was younger a 737 was rare for me, I spent many flights in AA MD-80s.

At least the 717s will be kicking around for a little bit. I suppose the 717 is to the DC-9 what the 737 MAX or NG is to the 737 Original Series: a rather modified and stretched airplane of the same fundamental design.

Now that's a sight to behold! I'm surprised they repainted it, though it looks pretty sharp with the silver engines.

Actually, the 717 was designed my McDonnell Douglas, and it was the next plane in the series. Then delta bought them out and renamed it lol.

It's a cool paintjob, but that flavor of 737 hasn't flown for SWA for 10+ years.  the -200 series, while totally dino-jet and badass, they are not efficient anymore.  FWIW, the only thing digital on them there planes is usually the copilot's watch.

Yup.  The 717 is a DC-9 type, then Boeing bought MD.  There are a few DC-9's flying in Alaska I hear - cargo.

Yeah, that think was a very strange creature. Looks a bit like a fish of some sort, maybe a bit bird like?

Kind of wish the YF-23 was chosen instead of the 22. Definitely like the appearance of that one:

I used to fly a lot as a kid. We always flew first class with whatever airline we could. We frequented AA mostly. My first time on Southwest I detested because there's no first class. That said, it was one of the best flights I'd ever been on. Since then, I personally started flying with them more and more, even turning down first class on my favourite aircraft, the 757.

Southwest doesn't treat you like a number, they treat you like the human being you are. They're very nice, but not overly bearing. Kinda like the Chick-fil-A of airlines. They love their jobs and have as much fun as they can with it. I never check luggage anymore (personal preference). But when I did, they were the only airline to never mistreat it. They never broke anything, and I even transported a hole ass train set (in N scale) via checked luggage with them.

Yes, their boarding process is asinine. But if you can get past that, you'll enjoy your flight. It's rare for a flight to be "bland" as usually there's at least one flight attendant who puts on a little show and has fun with their job. Sometimes the captain will even point out historical sites and places of interest if passing by. We once learned about Malta and the fires, and how the Maltese Cross became the symbol for being a firefighter in today's times.

Put all that on top of the fact that they only use 737's. Their entire fleet is the same series of aircraft. This means they have a much better time with maintaining them, and you as a passenger have a smoother overall flight (give or take some variables). Southwest seems to take very good care of their birds. I've only ever had one aircraft that had an issue while flying with them. It took longer for the engineers to get to us than it did to fix it.

IIRC Their accident rate is one of the lowest in history. They only have ever had three deaths in their time as an airline. There was an incident where a plane overran the runway and killed a person in a car. The second one was a would be terrorist, thanks to brave passengers beating him to death as he tried to break into the flight deck. Third one was very recently, and non-arguably the worst. A woman was sucked out of a window mid-flight. She died of a blunt impact to the head. It was caused by an engine explosion throwing shrapnel into the window which caused it to break. It was a fan blade that had suffered metal fatigue. I don't know anything else about it.

One of my favorite looking military jets has to be the T-38. From certain angles, it reminds me of the X-Wing from Star Wars:
