Whoosh - The Airplane and Airline Thread

handymanshandle

2761569.jpg

(Boeing 717-200)

Welp @handymanshandle suggested I start a jetliner or airplane thread, and since there's a fairly active car thread. Perhaps this will get some use?

So I guess I'll kick off the thread with what my favorite airplanes are... I generally like Boeing and Airbus. Used to be a big fan of Airbus. Mostly liked the A320 family.

Now it's a toss up between the A320s and 737s...

Although now the A310 has peaked an interest along with the MD-11 and MD-80/MD-90s.

I've actually never been in or flown in a plane before, although that'll hopefully change next year. Probably my first and second flights will be on American Airlines, either a 737-800 or A321 from Minneapolis Intl to Charlotte-Douglas Int'l then from CLT, I'd probably be on some CRJ to Huntsville. Although just to get a few 717 rides in, I'd probably take Delta a few times down there. Likely a 737-900ER to Atlanta then to HSV on a 717.

Not the biggest airplane guy, but I do love me some military aircraft.

One of my all-time favorite planes is the SR-71 Blackbird:

I've actually gotten the opportunity to see one of these IRL twice, it's a work of art if I do say so. Quite a bit smaller than most people expect it to be.

To me, there's no other jet that's like the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and the MD-11. That shit still looks modern to this day. Too bad it's retired from passenger service.

Oh man, the old Delta livery...

I found it interesting that the MD-11 lands at roughly fighter jet speed. IIRC, it was due to the smaller tailfins but I could be wrong..

That one is pretty neat. The B-29s and B-2 Spirits are pretty cool military planes. The P-8 and C130 are pretty cool too. I suppose the Airbus equivalents are neat too

The B-52 Stratofortress is amazing to look at too. What a piece of machinery that is.

If you're ever in Ohio, try to check out the Wright-Patterson Air Force museum, just a bit south of Dayton. I've been able to stop there a couple times as I pass through the state.

They've got a B-2, F-117, one of the B-29s that bombed Japan, and so much more.

Takes a few hours just to see everything there, and they're still adding last time I was there.

Really cool place.

Yeah, I've been through Ohio. I think it'd kinda be neat to take a road trip with @Dan Castellaneta to Dayton, OH and Washington, DC to go to the two museums there. or fly although they're not that far from HSV

I can imagine the need for oxygen, those things were practically in orbit.

I honestly love Delta's early 2000s livery.

I also fucking LOVE United's 90s and early 2000s grey livery.

I like to go to the back of airports and photograph planes landing and taking off. Using a Canon EOS 70D standing behind Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne. There is a great plane spotting place there and a food truck, so that is convenient.

yeah, while I never found out the reason for them I I thought that it must be for the engines because there is no way they get enough oxygen, I get that JP-7 is special but there is no way it doesn't need any oxidizer.

I also need to get back to my local airports and start back up of my flying lessons for my private licence.

Man I will never again fly in a 152, because I'm 6'2" and that didn't fit me at 6'.

If I lost some weight I think it'd be cool to get a PPL too.

then I could toss $24,000-$40,000 at an older 172 and maybe try to work for the Airbus final assembly plant in Mobile, AL when I move to AL in a couple years

That'd end up being like a 2 hour flight lol

I'm 190 6'2",  I like 172s but my favorite plane that I have flow has been a 1934 Piper Cub. I do love tail dragers there is something special about them that makes me love them.

eh I think if I were to get a PPL, I'd just try to get a type rating for a twin engine. Likely a Kingair or a Barron.
