PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KhCbkd
Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KhCbkd/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8600K 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor  ($238.99 @ Amazon) - The 8600K is a better value for GAMING than the 8700 - Trading HT for much higher clocks is a good deal to me
CPU Cooler: ARCTIC - Freezer 33 eSports ONE (Black/Red) CPU Cooler  ($29.99 @ Amazon) - Figured I'd go for a black/red theme on this one, so why not
Motherboard: ASRock - Z370 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($96.98 @ Newegg) -Cheapest Z370 board that isn't MSI
Memory: Team - Vulcan 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($139.99 @ Newegg) - Cheapest 16GB kit and it's red too
Storage: Patriot - Burst 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($48.98 @ Newegg) - The other build has no SSD, this one does. A pretty shit one, but an SSD nonetheless
Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($43.90 @ OutletPC) - That build has a 1tb HDD, so does this one
Video Card: MSI - GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 8GB Video Card  ($459.99 @ Newegg) - The 1080 and 1070 Ti perform about the same and the 1070 Ti is cheaper
Case: Corsair - Carbide 400C ATX Mid Tower Case  ($59.99 @ Newegg) - It's a case; actually a pretty good one too.
Power Supply: SeaSonic - FOCUS Gold 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($54.99 @ Newegg) - The Focus Gold is almost certainly better than whatever HP has in that machine
Wireless Network Adapter: Gigabyte - GC-WB867D-I PCI-Express x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter  ($33.89 @ OutletPC) - You wanted WiFi?
Case Fan: Cooler Master - SickleFlow (Red) 69.7 CFM  120mm Fan  ($8.24 @ OutletPC) - Some nice Red LED fans just to show off
Case Fan: Cooler Master - SickleFlow (Red) 69.7 CFM  120mm Fan  ($8.24 @ OutletPC)
Other: Windows 10 from Kinguin ($30.00) - No comment so as not to anger the mods

Optane is stupid so I didn't bother. An SSD and a non-Optaned HDD is a better option anyway at this price point

CPU: Core i9 12900K || CPU COOLER : Corsair H100i Pro XT || MOBO : ASUS Prime Z690 PLUS D4 || GPU: PowerColor RX 6800XT Red Dragon || RAM: 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance (3200) || SSDs: Samsung 970 Evo 250GB (Boot), Crucial P2 1TB, Crucial MX500 1TB (x2), Samsung 850 EVO 1TB || PSU: Corsair RM850 || CASE: Fractal Design Meshify C Mini || MONITOR: Acer Predator X34A (1440p 100hz), HP 27yh (1080p 60hz) || KEYBOARD: GameSir GK300 || MOUSE: Logitech G502 Hero || AUDIO: Bose QC35 II || CASE FANS : 2x Corsair ML140, 1x BeQuiet SilentWings 3 120 ||

Yeah for gaming the 8600k  is a better value, but those threads do make some difference in productivity workloads, and sure that 1070ti does perform almost as well as the 1080 I can't dispute that, also that 550 watt PSU is slightly better, It has that additional 8GB of RAM which is nice, and an SSD, though disputably, on a day to day basis that Optane is more useful, of course that is a small cheap part, that Windows license is also sketch, the HP also has Bluetooth.... and a cheapo keyboard... but I'm nit picking. Nice build, but I think that one main advantage that the HP desktop has, is that it is pre-built, and for a ton of people, even in this community that is a huge plus. But your alternatives are still excellent budget options. (and honestly I would probably pick them if I had the option.

I mean to add an SSD and 8GB of RAM to the HP to make it something approaching a sensible configuration means will cost another $150 at least at which point you have $1450 total spent at which point you could have an 8700K and an h100I

Sure, or you could be sensible and go third party for that, even for people buying a pre-built, almost nobody in their right mind maxes out on the RAM, another option is that you could configure the included Optane (if you remember to add the 16GB stick, free of charge) as either a booster for the HDD or substitute it for RAM.

Ouch! Well... at least the prices are supposedly declining.... and are expected to do so for the rest of the year... unless the Next iPhone or Note are a total hit.
