One interesting thing is that the faster memory at the same CUDA count, even with improved CUDA cores, the new card should be faster at 1080p than the 1080 TI, but the 4K performance isn't going to be much different since the bottleneck is still going to be the raw performance of the CUDA cores. This would line up with that one leak we got a bit ago with a bit 1080p jump, but limited 4K improvements.

 

It'll be interesting to see this play out.

Well that's something, I honestly don't think 1080p is dead for a long while, wait until Starfield or ES6 come out and cripple a titan v at 1080p.  As it is, games could look better to the point of doing that right now but the average person wouldn't be able to run it. I bet if Metro Exodus cranked the RTX integration to the max it would cripple a titan V at 1080p, considering it took 4 to run their nice demo.

A common complaint I see elsewhere is that consumer GPUs are lacking in ram bandwidth in order to get the most of the cores for compute uses. No, I don't mean the M word. It'll be interesting to see if there is much impact for those other uses.

4K exists and recently we've seen 4K 144hz displays too. 16GB is pretty much essential to drive 4K above 60FPS (even upto 60 tbh).

 

My guess is they're gonna position the 1180 as a 4K 60 card then the 1180ti will be for gaming at 4K 60+.

So it's not surprising that it's priced quite high. It's a niche market.

I wouldn't see the point in launching a flagship card with a "poor man's" lower vram version, it's not like a 1200$ 8gb card could be considered cheap and the kind of people who are looking to spend that much probably don't care about a couple hundred bucks. Besides this may also help dissuade miners who don't really have any use for the extra vram and would have to weigh the extra cost against the profits. We'll have to wait and see though.

Now I also understand that $1500 does seem pretty spendy to most people, but if you are only buying a GPU every 16-18 months then it really isn't that bad. Then you can just hand it down to another machine each time you upgrade. Works great for me at least.

Honestly I had suspected it would be a refresh of sorts. Likely won't see the increase in performance we saw with Pascal or Maxwell as they were big leaps.

Are you being sarcastic? Spending 1500 dollars on gpus every 12 to 18 months is insanely expensive for most people.

Well if you say every 18 months.. that comes out to about $85 a month on average. Most people spend more than that just eating out each week. So in the scheme of things that isn't very expensive at all.

Dude that's so unrealistic, for a start eating is a necessity while a GPU isn't but even disregarding that most people have $85 a month in disposable income while $1500 in a single month is way beyond what most people can afford.

I don't spend that much eating out each week. I hardly ever go out to eat usually once a month and that's about 20 bucks. Now it's easy to say 1500 every 18 months is a small amount when it is only 85 bucks a month but you have to realize people have other expenses that are more important than that to other people 85 dollars might be alot to them. At the end of the day 1500 every 18 months is alot.

And that's the point, every generation Nvidia are pricing more and more people out of their top tier products. It's one thing to tell people to live within their means but it's another thing entirely when their means are being removed for no reason other than moar profitz.
