BitFenix Prodigy and Prolimatech Samuel 17 cpu heatsink, should the fan on it be intake or outtake?

What would be more synergistic for this case?
 
On load at stock clocks I get like 65C (LinX). What do people do for cooling in this case? The fan on the heatsink is this

First of all, i dont understand why you are using a slim fan when you have so much headroom with a case such as Bitfenix Prodigy.

 

There is nothing wrong with your heatsink but you NEED to change your fan, that gelid is only good for very small cases where space is limited.

Your case supports up to 230 mm front fan and this is my favorite; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835345004

 

Again prodigy supports 140 mm for rear exhaust and I would recommend mounting this  for your rear exhaust; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608017

 

You dont really need to install fans on top, if you feel like it, get the same 120 mm noctua fans which you will be using for your heatsink and configure them as exhaust as well.

 

One more thing, you heatsink fan should always be blowing air downwards. This way it will be able to cool not only the cpu but also other components of your motherboard.

 

Dont forget to buy a quality thermal paste as well. It has a massive effect on how your heatsink will perform.

 

PS: If you decide to go with my advice, I expect your temps to drop by at least 15c and That is a very conservative assumption.

some questions. The fan in front, isn't it blocked by the front panel? And the heatsink is fine just the fan isn't? Or should I get a different heatsink?

 

Also if my mobo doesn't have enough fan headers, what do you do?

The fan up front isn't blocked--the front panel has intake holes on the sides.

 

And yes, your heatsink isn't bad, it's just that with the Prodigy, you have a ton of vertical clearance. You don't need a different heatsink, you need a better fan. Slim fans are usually paired with that heatsink to fit inside very small mITX cases. The Prodigy isn't THAT small :D

 

Finally, then you'll either need a fan controller (expensive) or you can attach the fans to the PSU via a 3-pin to Molex connector. Most fans come with these but if you don't then go buy some! They're cheap. I personally use these for the fans in my own Prodigy case. Keep in mind though, you won't be able to control their speeds this way.

Or grab either a fan splitter or hub that will be powered by molex

I've read on an article that yes, there is a difference but it isn't as crazy as you'd expect. You'll see an average spread of 12-15c on an OC'd CPU at full load. But on idle, you won't see much of a difference. So if you have the extra 10 dollars or so then why not?

 

I personally used the thermal paste that came with the Dark Rock 2 and it's keeping my 4.4Ghz 4670k under 75c!

so I got the two fans but my temps are almost the same, so it's probably the thermal paste, or the heatsink isn't good enough.

 

Oh I didn't get that last rear exhaust fan

buy a good thermal paste and a good exhaust fan, if it stays the same, change your heatsink. Go for a tower heatsink such as these ones. With a case like yours, you have so much clearance and take advantage of that.

dont think of other stuff that you bought... fans, thermal paste etc as wasted money, regardless of your heatsink, you need those in a good shape in any situation for a good airflow within the case.
