Building my first computer since 2006, need some guidance

Hi all. Looking to put something together on somewhat of a budget for now, though I plan on room for upgrades in the nearish future. Just for reference the last time I was really "into" pc gaming I was running an nvidia 8600 GT lol! Ultimately my goals will be running either Oculus, or a triple screen setup for racing sims with heavy sim hardware being pieced together over time (OSW wheel, buttkickers, android tablet for sim gauges, and eventually a motion platform).

I've spent the evening every night for the last week doing my fair share of youtube research. Seems the best bang for the buck is the 2600k, though as everyone says the mobo's are stupidly expensive on eBay. For the $200-250 range that it seems I'd be in after that combo, is there anything else out there thats slightly more future proof for the same level of performance? Ideally all I care to do is run Assetto Corsa, Pcars 2, F1 201x, iRacing, etc all at highest, or near highest settings. Rig won't be used for anything else. I bought Assetto Corsa earlier this week and tried it with my budget cockpit setup on my girlfriends system and as far as I could tell I was at ultra everything running 1080p. I didn't monitor frame rates but the system ran incredibly smooth. She has a i5 4590, ASRock Z97, GTX 960 4gb, and 8 gb of ram.

Greatly appreciate your time. Look forward to hearing some feedback. Thanks!

How about a Ryzen 5 1600 + B350 board? It's been the first time in a while where AMD products are incredibly competitive.

A R5 1600 is $159 and a B350 board is about $70-80.

I haven't touched an AMD cpu probably since they were competitive back with the Athlon XP xD!!! Learn me about the new Ryzens. Not against it, but all I've had experience with is i5 and i7's lately since I've been using mac's since 2010.

Well lets start with 0 and work from there :P? I know I'm not going to be able to get by with this spending less than $500 so I'll go with that. Already setting aside $100 for a GTX 960, that seems to be the going rate for them on eBay/craigslist, unless you can suggest a better option with better value?

Basically they made a new architecture and it's a huge hit. They copied Intel's numbering scheme so you can go from there.

If you want to play VR games a GTX 960 won't work. A GTX 1060/RX 580 is highly recommended. ($270-300)

Hmmm. According to Oculus the minimum kit is a 960. They lowered the requirements about a year ago. https://www.oculus.com/blog/updating-rifts-minimum-and-recommended-spec-os-to-windows-10/. I remember reading an article on polygon and being quite excited, especially after the price drop was announced on the rift.

With a Rx 480 it runs perfectly.

I'd recommend an i5 8400, 8GB of RAM and a GTX 1060 3GB. They are an awesome combo for not a lot and offers competitive performance for the price.

The RX 580 is a rebranded 480, they don't sell that anymore...

The 1060 3GB is about $20-50 less than the RX 580 4GB rn afaik.

But for VR gaming you need a lot of VRAM.
