Intel Hires Former Larrabee Architect

Intel’s Raja Koduri, previously of AMD, has just hired Intel’s former Larrabee GPU architect Tom Forsyth to aid in development the company’s new GPUs. Forsyth previously made advancements to AVX instruction processing, and has been speculated as a potential player for VR development focus.

 

Not very much for me to add. I haven't seen this posted on many major news outlets so I thought I should post it here. It's kind of interesting. Does this mean we could finally be getting a discrete GPU from Intel? What do you guys think?

I'd love to have another competitor in the GPU market, honestly.

 

Larrabee could have been a big success if everything in Linus's video was true.

Intel now has the brains and money so I wanna see some card outperforming NVIDIA. Id swap my CPU with AMD but now my GPU with Intel lol

I am definitely interested to see what Raja cooks up with the undoubtedly blank check intel is writing this project, if they are expecting a 2020 release which is insanely optimistic. I've always been told the secret sauce to being a GPU maker is the drivers and that nvidia and amd each hold so many graphics patents that it would be difficult to catch up, especially in regards to building a driver team.

AMD is worth 10 times less than nvidia and they need money, if nvidia wanted to they could license it from AMD but nvidia wont because they dont need to.

Also the future of gaming in the greedy corporatist view is Ray traced graphics rendered in the Nvidiot cloud and streamed to your mobile devices, and i mean all devices not just smartphone.

All other companies are playing the same old game of moore's law / upgrades, selling just hardware which is a very slow process, nvidiot is going for the top to win all, slingshotting past the competition, which is streaming services from the cloud with optimized GPU's and server's for the task, everyone who wants top graphics but doesnt like the idea of buying a 2000$ PC and two 500$ consoles and a lot of extra hardware will buy these services once the latency is fixed and servers upgraded. Also once developers start getting into bed with nvidiot streaming services you rest assured the quality and deals available from nvidia streaming will be much better than simple old school downloads.

 

Back to topic, you go Intel, we desperately need competition on the GPU market, the future will use GPU's more and more for many tasks and AMD cant cope with the market demand and technology advances pressures. Intel joining in will be a breath of fresh air, hopefully they design the proper GPU's and market them accordingly for the high end and server, nobody needs garbage low level gpu's HD 630 and alike. With intel's 10nm process their GPU's would be monstruous and give Nvidia a run for its money, just not for gaming though, intel doesnt have the required drivers/ team / quality to be comptetitive in gaming yet, maybe 2022/23 + and beyond i can see it happening.

Not really. They'd have to outright buy AMD to even get a shot at gaining an x86 license and even then it would be a decade of courtroom battles to get that shitshow settled. Meanwhile, they'll be facing antitrust issues as there'd only be a single notable graphics vendor for at least a few years and Intel's supposed success remains to be seen and any gains would be slow so you'd see a 99% market share for the foreseeable future.

 

TL;DR: no soup x86 for Nvidia.

Remind me again how game streaming will work when my only internet (similar for lots of rural people) is via tethered cellular at 6 GB per month? Better be some bloody amazing video compression.

 

Downloading the game merely requires me to bring a hard drive to another person's house to download it there and bring it back. Doesn't work to well for game streaming.
