Thunderbolt

Gibraltar

Hi,

I have two questions I'd like answered.

1. Simply put, what is the difference between thunderbolt 3 and USB-c?

2. In Linus' personal rig, how did he use Thunderbolt to run his computers the way he did?

Thank you

Type C is the new USB. It is smaller, faster and can deliver more power, 100 watts total if you have the right cable. Thunderbolt is more centered towards data transfer, and can sometimes be used to power external graphic cards with your laptop.

And to answer the 2nd question he used a hub that connects with one thunderbolt cable to the PC and gives you USB and video outputs on the other side.

USB-C is a physical port. Thunderbolt 3 is a logical interface, that uses USB-C as physical interface. Not all USB-C ports support TB3. For comparison, Thunderbolt 1 and 2 use the same connector as Mini DisplayPort.

Thunderbolt supports wide variety of connectivity options over PCI Express and DisplayPort links, therefor allowing to connect many different kinds of devices to it. Thunderbolt 3 can transfer at up to PCI Express 3.0 x4 speeds (up to 40 Gbit/s (5 GB/s)).
